| Sarcastus12-07-05, 03:16 PM | I currently have a Pixie Druid who weilds a Composite Shortbow of Holy Distant Shock. Basically, it's a common bow that over a few campaigns has been enchanted with Distance (120' range), Shock (+1d6 electricaly dmg), Holy (+2d6 Holy dmg vs Evil). So, depending on what I'm shooting at, it does a range of damage between 1d6 and 4d6. Now, IIRC, this is considered a +4 weapon (+1 for Distance, +1 for Shock, +2 for Holy). A +5 weapon is considered epic. Since I am a Druid and all my feats are geared toward wildshaping, I'm not able to take any archery feats. So, I'd like to see if there is an enchantment (in any WoTC book) that will help me with targeting creatures (something like Arrows of Seeking only for the Bow itself). Is there such an enchantment for a +1 echantment cost. My DM won't allow a homebrew version of this because after discussing it with him, he'd give it a +3 echantment cost and probably blow up the bow when used as the bow is not a masterwork to begin with and is already at a +4. But, he said if I could find an official version (which I haven't found yet), he'd probably allow it. PS - If I wildshaped into a Humanoid (ie. Thousand Faces - Elf) - would that (could that) grant any pluses or feats with archery? Is there any hope in this endeavor? |
| Iver Gearsham12-07-05, 03:28 PM | Yes it is called "SEEKING" in the DMG it is a +1 market price modifier. It removes concealment mischance blur, fog, darkness so on. If your weapon is not master work then by the RAW is can not be permanently enchanted with pluses and powers. And Epic is anything over +5 damage or more than 10 total powers and pluses. |
| Sarcastus12-07-05, 03:34 PM | I looked all over the DMG for that! I must be blind. Could you please tell me the approx. page that's on? Also - does having +3d6 damage qualify as being epic or am I safe for now? Thanks |

| Iver Gearsham12-07-05, 03:50 PM | top right hand side of page 225 in DMG +3d6 damage is not Epic by raw unless your DM say it is so. |
| tarkin12-07-05, 03:56 PM | 1) Your weapon needs to be made +1 before it can have any other enchantment on it. 2) A weapon that is +6 to hit and damage or greater is epic. If it is +1 to hit and has shocking, flaming, seeking, holy, keen, it is not epic. 3) A weapon that is total of +11 or better is epic. That would be: +1 to hit, +1 flaming, +1 shocking, +1 frost, +1 Seeking, +2 holy, +2 Axiomatic, +1 Ghost Touched, +1 Spell Storing (+11 total) would be epic. +3d6 is probably allowable. |
| Sarcastus12-07-05, 04:11 PM | So, let me get this straight so I know what to shoot for. So, first, what I need to do is somehow get it granted +1 status (which given the homebrew campaign world I'm in where I've spoken to gods and death on several occasions -gaining boons for my efforts - I can probably do). Second, then I can get a "Seeking" Enchantment on it. Then I can look at other options of enchantments (4 more enchantments tops??). Then when I go Epic - get it to go Epic with me like making the the Pixie Bow of Nature's Wrath or something. Is this a fair scenario to shoot for? |

Because if it was not enhanced with that simple +1 bonus IN THE FIRST PLACE then it should NOT have been able to recieve any OTHER permanent enhancments. AFTER you get that +1 enhancement (which is also a +1 market bonus to the weapon) you may then have up to +9 MORE market bonus worth of enhancements for a non-epic weapon. These enhancements need not necessarily be "+ whatever", they can ALL be other enhancements (like tarkin said) like: flaming, frost, spell storing, etc. If you do increase the "+ bonus" of the weapon, it can be up to +5 for a non-epic weapon. Does this clarify? |
| Sarcastus12-08-05, 02:51 PM | OMG! I think my bow is in deep trouble now. No, it did not have the +1 enhancement first and both the DM and I missed it. He's the one with the books and I've only been able to skim the DMG on occasion. (I didn't start off with the Bow - he initially gave it to me as a quest reward. It was originally a Composite short bow of Distant Shock which I later added the Holy to it but there was no mention of a +1. It looks like I'm going to have to have a nice sit down this weekend with him and go over the rules and how to adjust to bow to work within the RAW. Thanks for all the information. I appreciate all the help. |

You can download these and it is basically an up to date, online copy of the core rule books. There's no picutres or anything like that, but it has all the necessary info. |
| farfairer12-09-05, 01:20 PM | Sarcastus: For your convinence: The basic rules for magic weapons are on page 221 of the DMG. The rule you are looking for: A weapon with a special ability must have at least a +1 enhancement bonus. is the last sentence in paragraph 3 under the Weapons heading. This has been edited The rule for how many enchantments a weapon can have befor becoming epic is thus: A weapon may only have up to a +5 enhancement bonus (streight +to hit and damage) A weapon may have up to +9 in abilites. A weapons total enhancment bonus + abilities may not bring the weapon's bonus above +10. Holy is a +2 ability Distance is a +1 ability Shock is a +1 ability Seeking is a +1 ability Total of +5 in abilites The bow (once it has seeking put on it) will have a total bonus of +6 (+5 from abilites, +1 from enhancement). The weapon may still get up to +4 in more abilites or enhancement bonus befor becoming epic. Only abilities that are listed as a + ability count twords an item becoming epic. Abilities such as Elemental resistances for armor (which are listed as a streight gold cost) do not count twords an item being epic. |
| jaelis12-09-05, 01:43 PM | farfairer, that's incorrect. A +1 weapon with +9 in abilities is still non-epic, as Tarkin and Bondious noted. |
| farfairer12-09-05, 03:10 PM | farfairer, that's incorrect. A +1 weapon with +9 in abilities is still non-epic, as Tarkin and Bondious noted. Sorry you are right. I keep forgetting that while you can only have +5 enchancement bonus on a non-epic weapon that restrictrion does not apply to abilities. Again sorry. I edidted my original post. |
| Sarcastus12-09-05, 03:39 PM | Thanks for the information. I'm downloading the SRD tonight and will be using your info to make this work. Yeah, DM just helped my group create characters and gave us quickie spell lists. It's a homebrew world. I have all 2e materials and so the 3e stuff is taking time to get used to. Thanks again. |
| Sarcastus12-19-05, 04:57 PM | Well, just wanted to thank you guys for all your help with the bow. I worked it out with the DM and as it stands the bow I have is now a: Composite Short Bow +1 of Holy Distant Seeking Shock (effectively 1d6+1 +3d6) Funny, this is a very powerful weapon in the hands of a Pixie Druid - I wonder what would happen if a Ranger or Inniate of the Bow got ahold of it. Thanks again. |
