| StealthElite12-21-06, 06:21 PM | what is the difference between a 1 1/2 handed weapon and a two handed weapon? such as a Maul: 1 1/2 and a Greatclub: 2 |
| ShinAkuma212-21-06, 07:28 PM | I don't know that a maul is 1 and a half, but it refers to being between 1 and 2-handed. A bastard sword is 1 1/2 handed, because it is designed for both two-handed and one-handed use. Any one-handed weapon can be used two-handed, but normally two-handed weapons cannot be used one-handed. 1.5 handers get around that. |

| RavenDrake12-23-06, 01:21 AM | I think you will find that hand-and-a-half weapons can be used one-handed with the appropriate exotic weapon proficiency, but are otherwise a two-handed martial weapon. That's close, but not quite(though this is mostly an issue of semantics). They're actually One-handed Exotic weapons which can be used two-handed with martial proficiency. This is an important distinction for a couple of reasons (using oversized weapons, for example, or determining it's hitpoints for sundering.) |
| Tempest Stormwind12-23-06, 01:57 AM | what is the difference between a 1 1/2 handed weapon and a two handed weapon? such as a Maul: 1 1/2 and a Greatclub: 2 Historically, a hand-and-a-half sword was any sword designed for use both as a one-handed sword and a two-handed sword. Typically, they have a rather long grip in proportion to the blade, although this wasn't a requirement. Most such swords would fall under the term 'bastard sword'. The term 'hand-and-a-half' might also be applied to other weapons, but I've only ever heard it applied to swords (though I'm far from encyclopedic on this matter). In game-mechanical terms, these are typically one-handed exotic weapons that can be used as two-handed martial weapons if need be, just as RavenDrake mentioned. (However, he left off the Exotic Weapon Master as another big reason why the distinction's important...). The bastard sword is the textbook example since it's the only one in the PHB. |
| Yoplatz12-23-06, 11:47 AM | well a 1 1/2 handed weapon like a bastard sword can be held in twoo hands or in one with a shield. A two handed weapon can only be held with both hands. |
| Mitchell12-23-06, 09:48 PM | ...The bastard sword is the textbook example since it's the only one in the PHB. My turn to get nit-picky... You forgot the dwarven waraxe. ;) |
| Khadmus12-27-06, 08:15 AM | If there was a martial 1 1/2 hand sword, I would let players use it as a two-handed simple weapon. Just a thought. |
