Will pay good gp for +1 dwarven waraxe of bane. I know it doesn't make much sense to do something like this on the internet, but it is more authentic to actually purchase the weapon from someone else than an NPC. Will pay good gold, or possibly tade magic items.

D&D is not an online game. There is no continuity between anyone's games. And therefore, there's no validity to trading items between games, unless the two DMs are collaborating on it.
Therefore, it most certainly isn't "more authentic" to buy an item from someone not in your game. In fact, it's completely illegal and impossible, unless the DM is working it out somehow. And even then, it's a weird houserule.

And if that weren't bad enough, D&D is hugely controlled by the DM, and there's no authentification system. I could declare myself DM of my own game, magically create a +5 Adamantine Dwarven Waraxe of Bane for you, and sell it to you for 2 copper. But your DM would probably scream at you, and me by extension, for 'cheating' somehow, despite it being my right as a DM to create and sell magic items for whatever price I wish.

Buy it from an NPC. There's no way to trade items between different D&D games.

Yeah, I know, but by now I am desperate. My DM claims there is no one near us with anything remotely strong as the waraxe I am looking for.

Haha. I can see it now: a dwarf fighter/paladin wading nee deep in charred gobbos toating his trusty plasma rifle. I would end his life there.

It would be interesting to have linked games through DMs via the internet. This site would probably be the best way to make that happen, too. Think of the possibilities...

Then again, that stuff is done in a way through chatrooms and yahoo groups and such. But I can still dream of my massive online dnd game..

Making it even less likely that he'd even consider anything along these lines.

And so if I say "Hey, I have a +7 holy vorpal dragon bane dwarven waraxe of slice and dice death and you can have it for free" your DM is just supposed to let you have it? Sorry, but D&D is not Diablo II.

No, but he wouldn't give me the option of finding someone to craft it either. He is probably trying to keep me from getting ahead of everyone else, because he and I are the only veterans in our group.

I can see it now, +5 yadda yadda weapons on ebay being sold for $200. This really reminds me of diablo and everquest with people selling everything and its mother for real life money.
yojimbo99

10-23-04, 10:36 PM
Not real money. GP.
Beamup

10-23-04, 11:16 PM
People start doing it with GP, it'll spread into real cash. Inevitably. As demonstrated by Diablo II, Everquest, et al.

And let me get this straight. You're doing this because your DM has made rulings that seem to be specifically intended to keep you from getting such a weapon. Do you like wasting your time? Even if you found somebody who would make such a trade with you, do you really think your DM would even consider for a femtosecond allowing you do do it?

And that's not even getting into the fact that what it would look like IC is gold spontaneously vanishing to be replaced by a magic weapon. Few things I've heard of would make less sense in-game.

LOL

Yeah, like the DM will ever let that slide! Basically you can't find anybody in-game capable of creating the weapon you desire, so you decide to search on the internet for somebody willing to sell the weapon you need. If somebody actually wanted to sell you the weapon in question via this message thread, how are you going to explain to the rest of your party where your weapon suddenly arrived from?

Seems like it would just make more sense if you decided to take a month long journey to larger city, and wait for a skilled weaponsmith to make you the needed weapon. At least that would make more roleplay sense. If you can afford it, and if there is a large city somewhere in your country, then this shouldn't seem unrealistic to anyone. It's certainly better than saying, "Oh, I bought my axe from a vender on the internet".

Well at least he willing to pay good GP, and not just steal one. My son's character would be very upset if he woke up one morning and found his +1 Bane of Monstrous Humanoid Dwarven Waraxe missing.

Sorry, I can't help you; all I've got is flaming, shocking, and keen weapons.
Thorak

Given the gist of the thread since my post, I reiterate; your DM is never, ever, in a million years, going to allow this to happen. Even if there were any way to work it out in a reasonable way, which there isn't. Because anyone could say "Here, have my secondary +12 Hackmaster for free", and they're not losing anything because they don't have to change anything. And your DM will get ticked at you for cheating.

Which, for the record, this is, unless it's something you've worked out with your DM, in which case I would say your DM didn't think it through.

So I reiterate; you can have my +5 Flaming Shocking Dwarven Waraxe of Bane for 2 copper. If you feel there's something "wrong" with that, then you're absolutely right. And that's why it's a bad idea.

Oh, I see. Alright then...erase 3000gp from your character sheet and write in "+1 Dwarven Waraxe." When the DM gets uppity and demands to know why you've done this thing, just tell him Fixxxer fromt he WotC forums sold it to ya. That should calm him down.

Bah, erase 2 copper and take my +5 Adamantine Flaming Shocking Dwarven Waraxe of Bane. Pay less, get more!

I still say this is a bad idea. I'm being ridiculous to try and show why.

Hey, I've got an idea. You know in "Lord of the Rings" where Sam is stuck alone in Cirith Ungol with only Sting? If only Tolkien had the internet, he could have bought Sam a better sword from someone else.

Although your DM is the in-game boss, I do think it is very possible for you (a PC) to go to a large (VERY large) city and get one made for you. The DM can, of course, not allow this, but if he really wants to keep the game realistic, then he should allow this.

But buying things from people from other campaigns? No. Just no.
RodIshiCi

10-24-04, 10:12 PM
Well, if the things are like that, there are some solutions even for your case.
Say that your current Masterwork or +1 Dwarven Waraxe is a heirloom. Then get the Ancestral Relic feat and begin to burn all those useless piece of equipment, from shovels you won't use to that magical weapon no one has proficience or drive to use, so you can upgrade your weapon even if no one will sell you one or buy your current loot. This feat is in the Book of Exalted Deeds.

If you fail to meet the requisites of the feat or the DM won't allow it due your current axe being found from the last orc you killed, you can algo go for the Kensai Prestige Class. It's in the Complete Warrior, and allows to upgrade a weapon by burning XP.

well that makes sense, I wouldn't want one player way ahead of the rest either.

why not just be patient ... or go with a MW Dwarven Waraxe ...

The tough part isn't the buying of the weapon, it is the shipping and handling for sending it between campaigns!

Please explain to me why your DM would allow trading stuff between one campaign and another. For all he knows you could make a MuP, claim it has an axe and give it away for free.

Now, on to the topic...
Why is your character so desperate for this weapon? Yes, magical enchantments are good (are dwarves so enthusiastic about magic?), but how does this dwarf even know anything about this enchantment if he's never met anyone that has one or can make one?
I know that extra 2d6 is yummy, but it's probably not the most in-game of things to focus on.
