It seems to me that you can generally do much much more damage if you use two weapons instead of one weapon. Is there something that balances this so that you can be able to do just as well in combat with one sword vs. some one with two swords?

Depends on the build. if you're talking Fighter 20 you can use powerattack and a really big weapon with massive strength to dish out the damage. throw on cleave/great cleave and you can keep swingin. Whirlwind is another option if you're mobbed down by enemies.

I personally like the Frenzied Berzerker from the complete warrior (if you havent heard of it). Super barbarian basically, cool bonuses to power attack and cleave.

Try doing a search, im sure this topic has been done to death

1. If you use one weapon you can use a shield or add 1.5 times your strength bonus on a two handed weapon.

2. You can take other feats rather then wasting them all on the TWF feat chain.

Generally one weapon wielded with two hands is considered superior. The weapon can be larger thus causing more damage and with the 3.5 power attack you receive an extra two points of damage for every one pint of base attack bonus you give up. Also to continue to receive additional attacks for Two Weapon Fighting you must spend an additional feat at each +6 BAB.
That’s the consensus in my gaming group, am I wrong?

Nope, all true. Basically TWF is only mathematically worthwhile if you can add bonus die/damage from somewhere to the rolls (Sneak attack, favored enemy, elemental damage die, etc.).

TWF has greater requirements, both feat-wise and equipment-wise, than two-handed combat. However, for that cost, and with some wise weapon enchantment choices and some good class levels (such as Rogue, for Sneak Attack dice), TWF can grossly overdamage two-handed combat. But it's situational and costly.

If I had to say one was 'better', I'd say two-handed weapons, simply because the tactical variety you get with the extra feats and the reliability of the damage, even when not making a full attack, make it a good choice.

TWF is scary when tricked out with twin vorpal weapons.
