Yes, its another 1001 thread, but this one is devotely Soley to the rogue. I feel the rogue takes a back seat when it comes to equipment, So I am starting this thread to encourage the creation of Rogue equipment, magical and mundane.

2 rules:

1) Must benefit the Rogue class(or similiar, like the scout)
2) Can NOT be an artifact, why? to most rogues artifacts are loot not tools.

other than that, anything goes. I'll try to keep a list here on the first page for quick reference to posts.

1. Dagger of Many Uses (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?p=10988106#post10988106) -Me
2. Abyssal Dagger (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?p=11000504#post11000504) -Me
3. Dragons' Claws (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?p=11035455#post11035455) -Me

5. A good escape plan. Couldn't tell you how many times a character of mine could've really benefitted from an accurate map, or a shred of orientation with the area.

6. lamp oil
- set things on fire

- make the ground slippery

7. grappling hook

8. a small stick with a mirror

9. lockpicks

10. hat of disguise

11. coin with sharp edge (cutpurse tool)

12. THE KNIFE
(ref. The Simpsons)

13 A. the wizard
13 B. the fighter
(so 13. an other partymember. any. don't be shy.)

14. Adamantium crowbar, for crowbar funtionality and adamantium lockbreaking power.

15. Scrolls/wands/use activated magic items of silence.

16. Scrolls/wands/use activated magic items of summon monster/nature's ally whatever. It's a good for a diversion. Bag of tricks works too.

17. Bag of holding/portable hole. How nice it is to carry off gold staues.

18. A good fence. Gotta have somewhere to sell your loot.

19. Hat of disguise. To disguise yourself (duh)!

20. Ring of mind shielding with permanancied invisibility (Anyone with half a brain will make you take your rings off) as well as instant summons (if it falls off...)

21. Glove of storing. Who says the rogue needs a small concealable weapon? I can conceal a greataxe with his baby.

22. Wand/Scroll of Eye of the Hunter (I think this it, somthing like that, second level PHII ranger spell) adds +3d6 extra sneak attack damage. Thats equevelent to 6 levels of rogue. Thats 6 levels you could put into somthing else if you want utility without using offensive power. Or 6 levels more of sneak attack if your playing a fighty rogue.

23. Scroll/wand of detect undead. You have to watch out for undead. This helps you do that. The oher detect spells are good too, though this the most useful.

24. Undead/Construct bane weapon to make you less useless against these foes.

24: Wounding weapons and 2 weapon fighting; combine with flanking for constant sneak attack the results are very satisfying.

26 Rope. Go the the silk stuff. Costs more, but weighs less and is harder to break.

27. 10 foot pole. Always useful to poke possible traps with.

28. Chalk, always good use in mazes.

(what the hell ever number we're on): Henchmen. They are trap detectors/testers/removers, They carry the loots, they distract the monsters.

(next number): paper clips. Mcguvier time!

(another number): Qualls feather token: Tree. This is never not useful. You throw it in a cramped hallway in front of your persuers.

12-29-06, 04:13 PM
Shotput/small bowling ball- roll down potentially trapped corridors or roll down stairs as a distraction

Bag of Fool's Gold- use for a bribe against low-int beatsticks who could pummel you. Don't try with either dwarves or kobolds. Or use it like Bilbo used his shiny buttons in The Hobbit.

- A good alibi. :incog:

- A fall guy. *points to the orc picking his nose in the corner*

- A quality getaway horse. (Or a getaway giant eagle if you can afford one.)

- A reputation. After all, who want to pick a fight with Fidanni the Scoundrel who slew the Many-Headed Monstrosity with nothing more than a toothpick and a wad of used chewing gum? :D

* a rouge stick - oddly often misspeled rogue stick - to help disguise oneself, or replace chalk.

My sneaky bastard of a rogue never went anywhere without a couple of small bags of powdered glass for flinging into faces to facilitate speedy getaways.
He also had some small bags of pea sized metal balls used to discourage hot pursuit.
Both combinations saved my thieving behind more than once!

Flasks of acid- if you can't pick a lock, then burn through it. Plus you can throw 'em.
Second the crowbar- just give it to the raging barbarian and let him pop the door (he has a higher Str than you).

A dagger or other weapon with the corrosive weapon ability ;). A weapon that deals acid damage, eats through any lock.

Yes! the corrosive weapon and the persistant weapon, even the Adamantine Pruning shears :P are good examples of what I started this thread for, if you guys are patient enough to draw up actual stats I'll add em the real list on the first post :D

Acid Admantine dagger (When you need to cut, dig, eat, burn, break, sunder, and smash your way through anything).

Map. Map. Map. - escape routes, entrance routes, gaurd routes, everything should be labelled for the perfect heist.

potions, potions, potions - being bigger is useful, being smaller is useful, flying is useful, invisibility is useful, and casting spells from scrolls is not.

Ring of Blinking for sneak attack goodness.

Actually, the corrosive weapon is statted in the DMG II, but I can stat it here if you like.

"Pocket Light"
My rogue usually carry a coin (or anything coin like) with light spell permanantly on it.

When in a pocket (with a flap mind you), it,s out of sight. When he need light, he take it in his hand and he can control the amount of light by adjusting his fingers.

Simple yet effective ;) Good for any races. Human ('cause of the no see in the dark), Elves and other low light vision (as human but twice as far) and yes, even thoses darkvision type (you do know that dark vision is black and white ? You can,t even read or anything).

smoke bombs
For thoses distractions you need to hide, use a bandolieer (mispeled probably) with smoke bombs in it (forgot wich book had it sady). It's a standard action to throw and poof ! total concealement for 1 round, just enough to use that move action combined with a hide roll (pray that your adversaries don't have good spot checks ;) ).

Also, 1 of my rogue used to carry lengths of wire with him everywhere (about 6 inch each, a lot of it). Once in a while he stumbled on a trap he couldn't disarm (we had a wicked DM). And that 10 foot pole was too cumbersome (and pretty suspicious if you asked me). So he tied a wire to the mecanism and make the trap go "boom" from beyond harm's reach. yeah yeah , it's not very "rogish", but I tried my best to keep him alive lol And beside, the important thing is the loot no ?

Did I mentionned the wire is virtually weigthless, no one will ever question you on why you have pieces or wire in your pockets as opposed to a long piece that could be use as a garrote. Of course, to make something out of them, you need the "Use Rope" skill... but there is soooo many imaginative way to use that skill ;)

Well, that's my small contribution to this thread. Hope it's what Galeigh had in mind ;) if not, i'll come back with more ! And if so... well... I'll try and come back with more too lol

Rogues is the crazy class of D&D. Others classes are there to make rogues shine ;)

I bought recently a nice tool at the hardware store. It's a piece of saw-toothed wire with two keychain-like rings for handles. It weighs nothing, it can be coiled up and take no space, and it saws through metal! Plus, I'm sure it could be used as a garrote. Call me a moron if you want, but I think it's the best rogue tool ever.

Now you may say "yes but in medieval times (which is what most people use as a guideline for technology in D&D) thay did not have such high-quality steel or smithing technology and yadda yadda..."

That's what adamantine is for, guys. You could saw anything with hardness under 20!

Now I just need to come up with mechanics for a saw (what does it do? automatic damage? bonus on Strength checks to break items?) and I could stat this wonder. It would probably cost around 200 gp (one piece of adamantine ammo costs 60), weigh nothing and be useable as a garrote.

Might I add easely concealable even trough a tourough search ? Yes, I think I can lol

the wire-saw is in one of the 'class acts' articles in dragon magazine. it was originally disigned for a ranger (next to it is some other good stuff, like inflateable kayack).

A glass dagger (or perhaps even a glass-steel glass dagger)

A box filled with a mix of marbles and caltrops

Caltrops with the tips painted glossy black (Makes people think there's poison on them, and slows the pursuit)
Drucilla_Rocks_my_Socks

01-01-07, 08:14 AM
Hmmm...I got thinking afew more...

Permanancied invisible caltrops.

Permanancy+invisibility can be very useful for rogues when aplied to alot of different items.

Invisible clothsline?

Hey, I could see the uses, assuming you have permanant see invisibility on (or a ring that grants that ability...). Put them up behind you to trip people up. You can see them, your enemy can't.

A UMD rogue working togeather with an artificer/wizard is going to an unstoppable cat burglar.

Invisibility on objects makes them unnoticable. Instant summons gets you your tools when somone locks you up. Gasious form, etherialness, demension door, disintegrate- all have obvious uses. Evocations, illusion, and conjuration all form great distractions.

Also the best thing would be the ability to supress magical auras, so that when somone scans you with detect magic you don't light up like a christmas tree.

Wow! i can't believe i made it this far without someone else listing this first.

- Flour: you all know it as a ingredient in many tasty things but the applications are so vast no sensible rogue should be without. find invisible things. sift in air for explosion. bluff as an inhaled poison. put in a sack for a weapon. the list goes on.

A map that automatically traces your steps from a starting point that you designate.

A piece of paper that magically copies any other document it is laying on top of with a command word.

A coin of continengcy(sp?). Allows the owner to cast or have cast into the coin spells as if he/she had the contigence spell cast on them. The spell/spells transfer to the pocessor of the coin. (this may be more artifact like...)

Backstab? Maybe you meant "sneak attack", old-timer :) .

ahhh crap, hey just cause I started out with 2nd ed. doesn't make me old buddy ;)
Okay....hmmmm new stuff that directly benefits the rogue and other roguey types huh?.......
A magick talisman that when stuffed in a dead mans mouth automatically foils any speak with dead or other such attempts to gain information from the corpse. (dead men tell no tales)
Used by the really, really, REALLY, secretive assassin and thieves guilds. Oooh, in fact add in a thing that if the guy is ever resurected he needs to make a will save before hes even able to speak, made once every 20 minus character level days(minimum once per day). The character can keep rolling saves until he makes it, this is mainly a residual of the foul magicks involved in the charm but it also serves to give said guild of weasely types a "grace period" should the person be raised from the dead.

I'm amazed at the dyschronicity -- Rogues carrying marbles or ball bearings?! Don't you people realize that making things spherical inexpensively is highly involved technology, and people carrying around such expensive tripping devices tend to get locked up? Dried peas, a chunk of lard, flour, and a good quantity of pepper. The peas aren't perfectly round, the lard is a tad less handy than an oilcan, flour isn't as flashy as Dust of Appearance, and the pepper isn't as potent as Dust of Sneezing and Choking, but you'll never get your lunch fixings (pea soup with dumplings) confiscated by the guards.

If you want something that'll really help out a Rogue, try one level of Cleric. The +2 to Fortitude and Wisdom saves offset Rogue weaknesses there, the two Domain granted powers can give you all sorts of help (I like Celerity for the +10' speed), and you get useful spells like Grave Strike so you can sneak attack undead.

Hmm, no periscope yet.

I take it we define "tools" to be items, as opposed to useful abilities / combos etc, otherwise I'd throw in either a level of totemist or shape meld(blink shirt).

how about tranq darts (sleep poison) to compliment the garrot?

immovable rods (and their lesser cousins spider poles)?

truely novel ideas... Got nothing atm.

I think using gate rings to disarm stuff has come up somewhere.

delayed fireball beads wrapped in quintessence have also come up.

item of silence at will (it's so good, I thought I'd mention it again :))

Wand/scrolls of true strike. Not original, but necessary for negating concealment to be able to sneak attack. The +20 to hit doesn't hurt either.

Nonsense, talk to your party caster and you can easily get some goodies close enough to spherical to make them roll. Or if you don't mind the expense and want an easy way to hide the tripping device in plain sight, get a pearl necklace.

The Dust of Sneezing and Choking and Dust of Appearance you list are magical items that may or may not be readily available in a particular campaign.
Whereas, flour, lard, and pea balls are mundane items readily available, and do not necessarily conote illegal activity.
As far as manufacture of metal bearing like objects, they do not need to be perfectly spherical objects. But I would think that for a small price, any blacksmith would melt an iron bar into a bucket of cold water, resulting in the aforementioned pea sized metal balls:D
Galeigh

01-05-07, 07:21 PM
Sphereical metal objects could be mass produced via molds (Same way lead balls were for guns duh!) but in a world of magic with the FABRICATE spell, I dont think it matters, they can be CHEAPLY mass produced.
IrishRover

01-06-07, 01:14 AM
"Marbles" could be simple clay balls made with essentiallt no skill needed. Fire them perhaps--still cheap, as a few would take up otherwise unuesed nooks and crannies in the kiln
and they might well be cheap kid's toys. Marbles are easy
Metal ones do better when stepped on by super heavy critters.
