well, i thought it would be cool to get a list of 101 homemade or offical artifacts down. I'll start i guess:

This one is taken off the newest R.A. Salvatore series:
Zhengi's Creation
It is a book when opened, takes control of the human, using some of its life force to create a castle. The castle's size depends on waht Zhengi's creation book it is. It works by using the life force of the opener to get things going. They become very sick and week and die in 1d4 + (con. mod) days. Each day they suffer -2 constitution -2 strength and -2 dexterity damage and their hit points are reduced by half. The sufferer must make a fort. save of DC 20 each day or take an additional -1 constitution damage. The only way to live is to defeat the castle's lich. Once the lich is defeated. The effect goes away immediately.
In the back of the book is a purple small stone, that fits in the palm of your hand. It is in the shape of the skull of the lich. You can then from now on summon the lich whenever you need it. The lich can communicate telepathically through the stone.
Zhengi's creation's have large numbers of gargoyles, flesh golems, daemons, mummies of several different types of creatures (such as gnolls) and Iron Golems. They also have a castle lich.

A lich could be of any creature type but most likely: Humans
Dragons
Dwarves
Halflings
Elves
Drow

If the stone is taken out in the back of the book, the keeper of the stone can raise the dead of the race of the skull depicited in the stone and can control them and their actions. The raised creatures are under the complete control of the stone keeper.

This black feather overcomes the once in a lifetime limitation of the book of universal law.But this comes at a price.Every time the feather is used it reduces the wisdom of the user by one until it reaches 3 and the user turns chaotic when he doesn't passes a DC 15 will save. The use of the feather has strange effects on the book roll a d12 to determine which:

Here's my artifact. Not much in the way of numbers, but I think it's a good one.

The following staff was created by a powerful archmage at the behest of one of the mightest warriors in history.

An accomplished leader, a master of every weapon known to exist, and a darn handsome fellow to boot , this warlord sought a weapon that would harness his consumate skill and provide him with any weapon he might need at a moment's notice.

The result was the Warlord's Staff, a major artifact.

The Warlord's Staff appears as a 6-foot long quarterstaff of dull gray metal, with untold amounts of carving running it's entire length. Closer examination will reveal that the carvings are actually depictions of assorted weapons, all rendered in the most accurate detail.

The powers of the Warlord's Staff are as follows:

1) At will, the wielder can select any simple, martial, or exotic weapon, melee or ranged, that he has seen before (and the carvings on the staff count for this purprose). The staff will then change into that weapon in the span of one round.

2) The Warlord's Staff grants automatic proficiency with the weapon whose shape it has assumed, as per the master's touch spell (WotC online Spellbook).

3) 5/day, the wielder of the Warlord's Staff can use the spell mirror move (WotC online Spellbook) on himself only.

4) The Warlord's Staff has a magic weapon bonus equal to +10. Unlike normal weapons, however, the wielder can assign this bonus however he likes, thus granting it whatever abilities the wielder may require at the moment.

[Optional] Once an ability has been assigned to the Warlord's Staff, it cannot be changed for a 24 hours.

Example: The wielder gives the Warlord's Staff a +5 bonus to attack and damage rolls. He then assigns the remaining +5 bonus to the bane, holy, and lawful properties, leaving a total of +2 available for another ability.

I think you might want to limit the +10 thing.

perhaps you can give the weapon the abilyity to "copy" from other weapons.

ranger has a flaming bow, paladin have a undead bane holy keen whatever,

so the sword could become a flamming undead bane holy keen sword

Actually, +10 is the maximum total value of bonuses a non-epic magic weapon can have. So it's not too far out there.

Sure, you could have all +10 put into attack/damage, but you wouldn't have any special abilities at all.

Alternatively, you could dump +10 points worth of assorted special abilities into the Staff, but get no bonus to attack or damage (other than what the abilities themselves might grant).

And the 24-hour wait would prevent you from bouncing back and forth at will.

Of course, if that doesn't pan out, I could still go with the "ability copying" ability you mentioned.
