Once I had a hole party of spell casters, one of the wizards decked himself out so he was perma-fire-proof and gated himself to the fire plane (my players love the fire plane) he took a 2 bages of holding and 2 portable holes,
he came back with them full of molten rock.

The party soon after hunted down a white dragon.

the whitty wizard decided to get eaten.

after words he eptied the (still hot) contents of the bags and holes into the dragon, killing it in 4 rounds.

"Putting one bag of holding within another is just like putting
the bag into a portable hole. Items that function like bags of
holding, such as Heward’s handy haversacks, cause the same
mishaps when mishandled."

extradimentional spaces put inside extradimensional spaces are BAD for the fabric of reality....the fabric of reality will make this abundantly clear to you when you do so...

in other words...bag of holding inside bag of holding=quick one way trip to the astral plane(not to mention you lose you bags and everything stored in them)

But not always. From the same FAQ:
"Spells that produce their own extradimensional spaces, such as rope trick, pose no danger to occupants who may be using portable holes, bags of holding, and the like."

Decanter of Endless Water + Portable Hole

Open portable hole-->set decanter to maximum setting-->put decanter in portable hole-->close portable hole-->profit

Caution: DO NOT OPEN portable hole once the process begins!

Portable holes have no maximum weight capacity, so the question becomes how much water you can create before the density breaks your decanter. If you can find a way to make the decanter indestructable, you can have your very own portable star, eventually.

If that were true in 3.5, then why doesnt it mention anything like that in the item description? It still only says its a bad idea to put a BoH in a Portible Hole, and vice versa. Now that I think of it, the descriptions didnt change from 3e to 3.5, so I see no reaso why I cant do it.

However, if you use similar magic as an example, it wouldn't even do that (items cannot be summoned/created inside an already occupied space).

I've given you the FAQ answer (which is still applicable, and seems clear). Play as makes ya happy.

However, if you use similar magic as an example, it wouldn't even do that (items cannot be summoned/created inside an already occupied space).
But wouldn't using that logic imply that a decanter of endless water cannot be used underwater? Perhaps I have been mistaken in treating water like air (i.e. not treating it as occupied space) for purposes of summoning objects and creatures.

As for your point about the psi limit, the problem is that there is no official ruling, that I know of, for what happens when something tries to supress the geyser. A similar scenario to consider would be what happens when the decanter is encased in a thick layer of metal. Does magic cease to function simply because there is very little room left?

A similar scenario to consider would be what happens when the decanter is encased in a thick layer of metal. Does magic cease to function simply because there is very little room left?In D&D, that is generally the case. We cannot expect WotC to cover every conceivable possibility within their rules, but we have certainly seen some guidelines (and they are definitely more sensible than saying everything is turned to plasma, star, black hole, etc.). For summoning/creation you must have allowable space. For enlarge, a strength roll is made, etc.

I would treat the decanter similarly... not that we really needed rules to come up with a suitable result (one that didn't involve the destruction of the universe). The "stabilized PSI" method is certainly most reasonable and supported I've seen. Once the portable hole is full (and under equal pressure), the water flow should stop... that's just normal reasoning (no, DM's aren't required to use such common sense, but it makes the game more fun for me).

I've always viewed the decanter as opening a very small gateway to the elemental plane of water (I believe this concept is fairly canon in D&D for things like this). For the geyser setting, it's possible that the gateway is in a pressurized (i.e. 'deep') section of water.

Sovereign glue + decanter of endless water + item of continuous bless water = Holy Supersoker dealing 480d4 damage per round to undead or evil outsiders in a 20ft line {(gyser mode) 30 gallons x 8 (pints/flasks in a gallon) x 2d4 damage (damage from one flask of holy water)}
