Ok if I'm a 12lvl warlock with the feats: craft wonderous item, Extraordinary Artisan, and Mercantile.. did I do the math right?

With the IMBUE ITEM warlock ability, If I want to make an a wonderous item that allows me to say.. cast the 9th lvl spell shape change 1/day

Also is the below "caster lvl" in the formula.. would I use my character's current caster lvl (lvl12) or the lvl a caster could usually be able to cast said spell (such as wiz18)?

For arguments sake I'll take the higher of those numbers, 18.

Formula:
spelllvlxcasterlvlx1800
9x18x1800= 291,600

usable only 1/day = basecost/5
291,600/5=58,320
58,320=base cost

base cost/2= 29,160material cost to create

Extraordinary Artisan feat:
29,160x.75= 21,870

So according to my math to make this item at lvl 12 for a warlock it would run $21,870+2,333xp.

1) Did I do the math right?
2) Should I use my class caster lvl when making this item or the caster lvl another class could cast this spell?
3) Is it me or is being able to cast shape change each day for this amount of money/xp sweet? :)

PS- and if you don't want an item with shapechange.. substitute it with some other 9th lvl (wiz or priest) spell for the same cost . ;)

Remember to include the annoying little multiplier for duration. I forget which one Shapechange is.

It's not a continuous item, which is the only time the multiplier applies.

Grab the psionic item skin of proteus. Continual metamophosis. :)

I assume all the requirements for Imbue Item have been followed?

1) Your math looks right on the surface.
2) You need to use the lowest level it can be casted normally OR your level it can be cast (if your level is higher). 9th level means 17th level caster minimum or higher.
3) Not bad, but short duration. IIRC 9 rounds?

#2, I'm not disagreeing.. but where did you find this information? I can't seem to find it anywhere? As imbue item only says:

"A warlock of 12th lvl or higher can use his supernatural power to create magic items, even if he does not know the spells required to make an item (although he must know the appropriate item creation feat). he can susbtitute a Use Magic Device check (DC15+ spell lvl for arcane spells or 25+spell lvl for divine spells) in place of a required spell he doesn't know or can't cast..."

There also is no errata I find to clarrify this. It has me thinking that making an item with a 9th lvl spell would use my current caster lvl which would be 12 in this case. If I'm wrong please feel free to clarrify and give me some link or some book info that contradicts this..

Oh and shapechange cast at 17thlvl lasts for 170minutes (10min/lvl)=2hours and 40 minutes ;)

For balance sake and sanity sake, I believe you're going to use your Warlock's level as the "Caster Level" ... in other words, since you're only level 12 .. I don't think you can craft that item, since it requires a minimum of level 17 ...

Not sure what the official stance is, but from a balance perspective, it makes sense ...

(Else 12th level Warlocks craft scrolls/items of 9th level spells with ease, and unbalance all future encounters ... )

You've figured out why warlocks are nasty as hell past 12th level.

It is in the FAQ.
Whenever using item creation, you always use the lowest to cast it normally regardless of what level you cast it.

It's a warlock, with the UMD check you can emulate both caster level and if you're ability score isn't high enough, that as well. Basically, as a warlock, with a good enough UMD skill you can make frigging anything. Even artifacts, although you'll be epic level by the time you get to that. Actually, I don't think you even have to emulate the caster level. I'd need to peruse the CA again to figure it out.

The item doesn't have a prereq of being lvl 17.. it has a prereq of casting that spell which could be done from scrolls even. With this viewpoint I don't see why a warlock lvl 12 with the imbue item ability couldn't make that item (however the items caster lvl would be 12 to match my warlocks cl).

Any other view points for or against this? I'm open to all logic.

Taken from Faq:
*Q:Is caster level a prerequisite for making magic items?
A:* No, thank Pelor. It used to be, but DMG errata has dropped CL as a prerequisite for magic item creation. (This refers specific items, not the item creation feats themselves, guys) The listed CL's now only refer to a common CL at which that item might be found. /Pearls of power/, for instance, might be commonly found at CL 17, but with the appropriate feat (CWI, which, incidentally, requires CL 3), the spell prerequisites, and enough time and money, anyone can craft them.

Looks like as long as I can get my hands on the spell to create the shape change item (unless my DM adds other prereqs.. and he'd be smart to add them lol) I can make it. Doesn't matter if I use my imbue item (since there is no CL prereq to make the item) or if I used scrolls.. both would work. So I see no reason at lvl 12 I couldn't make said item provided I succeeded on my use magic device roll and had enough gold and XP to make it. :D

Correct you can make it. The cost is half of the market value of the item as created by a 17th level Wizard caster and the CL would be 12.

Going on your math from the first post:
9*17*1,800/5 (1/day) /2 (material cost) *.75 (EA feat) = 20,655 gp
CL 12th item

Yeppers, looks good, except since my CL is 12 not 17, I'm thinkin this would be:
9*12*1,800/5 (1/day) /2 (material cost) *.75 (EA feat) = 14,580gp +1,555xp

Even better lol
Shape change for 2 hours/day for only 15k. I rikey.. I rikey a rot! :D

Guess you missed my point.

Even tho your item is CL12, you still pay half the cost of a CL17 item because a Wizard would need to be CL17 to make it.

So out goes 14,580, in comes 20,655 gp.
