A good place to start would be with +1 armor, weapon, and shield (if used). Then take a look in the MIC at the armor and weapon crystals. Without knowing stats or style you are looking for it would be hard to give more advice.

half of the money for offense: (+2 attack, +2 damage)
+1 weapon....2300+weapon cost (longsword: 15)
gauntlets of ogre power (+2 strength) ...40000

second half of the money for defense: AC will be 23 (or 24 if you have Dex 12+)
+1 fullplate.......2650
+1 heavy shield.......1170
+1 ring of protection.....2000

Total: 12135, the rest for mundane items and a few potions.

Edit: If you want more defense, swap gauntlets of ogre power for amulet of natural armor+1 (2000) and cloak of resistance +1 (1000)

If you're looking for versatilitly and ease of damage type, I suggest
Spiked Heavy Steel Shield and Gyrspike. With TWF, Exotic Weapon Proficiency and Improved Shield Bash, you can deal Slashing and Piercing, or Bludgeoning and Piercing damage all while maintaining a decent AC. Or if a Dwarf, using a Dwarven Ugrosh and a Heavy Steel Shield. With the first version, you can disarm and trip people easily, with the second, you can drop the shield and set the Urgosh against a charge. Never get caught with your methaphorical pants around your ankles again!

Expect the DM to hate you, however.
