Heck, historically, some very long spears were made by attaching two long poles - though certainly not in a 'snap appart' kind of way. If you have craft (weapons), you could probably mount a spear point on a different length pole, or come up with a two-part pole that you could assemble or dissasymble to make either a long or regular spear, as desired, given some time. Enchanting it would be a whole 'nuther story, though, since magic items are expensive and don't take to be broken and repaired, and broken-down and snapped-together probably aren't that different. Asside from crafting and repair rules, though, there's nothing much to address the idea in the rules. As a DM, I'd probably be OK with the idea. For a normal weapon designed that way, I'd probably rule that you can only break it down or re-assemble it out of combat (taking a few minutes). Maybe the masterwork version (at an additional masterwork cost) might be done as a full-round, AoO-provoking action. A magical enchantment that allowed a spear to change between being a spear and being a longspear doesn't sound unreasonable to me, either. The only question would be the action required to make the change, and, most magic items - including weapons with interesting abilities that can be turned on and off - take a standard action to activate. I'd call it a +1 equivalent enchantment. |

If so, I would say perhaps taking a full round or standard action that provokes an attack of opportunity to screw it together would be appropriate. I would suggest using adamantine for the metal components, both for its DR and hardness breaching and durability. Ironwood on the wooden components would also be wise. If you are going to invest the time, gold and xp to make something magical you don't want it breaking on you. Longspear: A longspear has reach. You can strike opponents 10 feet away with it, but you can’t use it against an adjacent foe. If you use a ready action to set a longspear against a charge, you deal double damage on a successful hit against a charging character. Quarterstaff: A quarterstaff is a double weapon. You can fight with it as if fighting with two weapons, but if you do, you incur all the normal attack penalties associated with fighting with two weapons, just as if you were using a one-handed weapon and a light weapon. A creature wielding a quarterstaff in one hand can’t use it as a double weapon—only one end of the weapon can be used in any given round. The quarterstaff is a special monk weapon. This designation gives a monk wielding a quarterstaff special options. Shortspear: A shortspear is small enough to wield one-handed. It may also be thrown. I would say if properly constucted the two components could be weapons in and of themselves. An adamantine capped quarterstaff and a short spear that happen to screw together. Of course when combined on the spear stats would matter which also counts for any enchantments. Now another option is requiring both components to be enchanted (each paying their own costs) and require a seperate enchantement with its own cost that only applies when the two pieces are married. If I were your DM I would go with that one. If you have the versitility of three different enchanted weapons you shouldn't get a discount by not paying for the enchantement of three seperate items. |

Negeotiate with your DM to determine how exactly it would function. (+1 variant, Up to 3 times per day the wielder of this longspear make speak a command word that shrinks the Longspear to a regular spear length.) (+3 variant, As a free action, once per round, you may speak a command word to shrink/enlarge the spear so that it can be used as a long spear or a standard spear length) |
| Lionheart42908-31-05, 01:11 AM | There are stats for a spear in one of the dragon magazines that is a shortspear until you press a hidden button and it extends into a longspear. It's awesome, but sadly i dont have stats for it. I know it was like, 150 gp. |
