Hi

Can anyone answer a couple of old, nagging questions for me ? Been off and on D&D for a long time the old 1st ed. skipped the second, back with AD&D 2nd ed. skipped 3rd getting back with 3.5 etc...

AD&D 2nd edition, the paladin.... When they said he can only keep as much gold as to keep himself fed, buy equipment, pay servants, small living etc... What is the exact amount of treasure a papadin can keep for himself [ after the tithe of corse ] ? Has an official answer ever been given ? That has caused more arguments over the years for me than I can remember.

AD&D 2nd edition, the bastard sword.... 1d8 one handed ,2d4 two handed . Is 2d4 statisticly better than 1d8 ? There must be some reason for it ? Didn't 3rd edition go to d10 for two handed use, I was told ?

Thanks

2d4 averages one-half point better than 1d8, or about 10%.

In 3E, the bastard sword does 1d10. A weapon's base damage doesn't depend on how you wield it, but you get extra strength damage if you use two hands.

There's no set amount and there never can be. All campaigns are different, a character's need from one game to another will always be different, etc.

Like, how much does a paladin with a large estate need versus a paladin that has no property and travels constantly on his horse?

The difference there is huge.

There simply can never be a one-off answer that will apply to everyone. It's best to just figure this out with the DM before the campaign starts so you know what you can keep for yourself after you're able to tithe.

1D8 will do a minimum 1 damage, maximum 8 and an average of 4.5. 2d4 will do a minimum of 2, maximum of 8 and an average of 5. So by strict averages, not that much more damage. However, let's look at the probabilities of doing certain amounts of damage. For 1d8 there are 8 possibilities, 1-8, for 2d4 we have 16 possibilities (4 results on the first die times 4 results on the 2nd), so let's assume 2 of each outcome for the 1d8 vs. the 16 possible results of 2d4:

1d8 has 2 possibilities for each value (easy)

For the 16 possibilities for 2d4 we get the following distribution:

2, 1 result
3, 2 results
4, 3 results
5, 4 results
6, 3 results
7, 2 results
8, 1 result

So as you can see, you have a much higher chance of doing around the average damage while with 1d8 you have an equal chance of any outcome.

A paladin was supposed to tithe (I think it was 10%), but the restriction on wealth didn't really mean that much. You couldn't easily buy magic items in 2E, like you can in 3E, and pallies could have all the items they could find & use. Most monetary wealth was still being eaten up in training costs, anyway, wasn't it?

AD&D 2nd edition, the bastard sword.... 1d8 one handed ,2d4 two handed . Is 2d4 statisticly better than 1d8 ? Yes. Only half a point on average, but still better. The 2-16 (avg 9) vs L creatures was definitely better than the one-handed 1-12 (avg 6.5). The Bastard sword also had better Weapon vs Armor adjustments, IIRC.

Thanks for the answers !

Do you think in 2nd AD&D making the Bastard Sword's two handed use 1d8 + 2 but keeping the L creature damage the same would unbalance anything ? With the 2 handed sword doing 1d10 it would rarely match it I guess OR would it mean readjusting ALL the weapons to keep things kosher ? Would it make it to versatile ?
