From the SRD: "This information is separated from the damage reduction number by a slash. Damage reduction may be overcome by special materials, by magic weapons (any weapon with a +1 or higher enhancement bonus, not counting the enhancement from masterwork quality), certain types of weapons (such as slashing or bludgeoning), and weapons imbued with an alignment."

1) Say you have a +3 Defending Sword. You shift all +3 to AC. You hit a creature with DR 5/magic, do you bypass the DR now that your enhancement is all in your AC?

2) You shield bash the same creature with a +2 Shield. Does the shield bypass the DR or not?

#2: It depends on whether your shield is enchanted as armor or a weapon. A +2 (weapon) spiked shield would penetrate, but a +2 (armor) spiked shield would not. That's how I see it, anyway.

#1: I have no idea. I could make something up, but I don't want to do that.

As I see it, the +3 was never there to shift into your AC. Only your BAB can be shifted there. You can't suddenly make your magical sword mundane, or supress its abilities with a different stance, etc.

And as far as the shield goes, damaging them should be perfectly fine, but wouldn't it be subdual without spikes? When you enchant a shield's spikes, you target the spikes themselves, not the shield. The shield is still mundane, but the spikes are magical.

in my opinion, the intent of DR #/magic meant you could overcome the DR with any magical weapon (in my opinion, DR #/magic is the most useless type of DR there is, especially when you get to higher LVs, since everyone & their moms will have magical weapons of some kind).

anyway, even though you shifted your bonus to defenses, your weapon is still magical in nature, thus a magical weapon should be able to overcome DR #/magic.

on the other hand, there are DRs that states DR #/+1 or +2, in that case, i'll be rather unsure as to whether your defending weapon/shield will still overcome it; but i'm leaning towards a no (correct me if i'm wrong).

speaking of DR #/magic, i have a question as well: will a regular weapon affected by the "bless wpn" spell be considered magical for purposes of overcoming this DR?

speaking of DR #/magic, i have a question as well: will a regular weapon affected by the "bless wpn" spell be considered magical for purposes of overcoming this DR?Considering the text explicitly says "is treated as having a +1 enhancement bonus for the purpose of bypassing the DR of evil creatures..." and explicitly says it doesn't otherwise then that's your answer. It bypasses DR/magic for evil creatures (only). It also bypasses DR /good.

If all you want is DR/magic, you're better to use magic weapon (also Pal1) instead.

2) Just because you switch the bonus to Hit to AC still makes your sword magic. A monk with Ki (magic) does not have any bonuses but still can defeat DR/ magic. This should work with Sunder as well, but you only suffer the negative to opposed rolls because you don't have the +3 to hit.

1) Hmmmm, I would have to agree...if you had a spiked shield where the spikes were enchanted it would defeat DR/magic. Since a shield can be use as a weapon stressing "can" its magical bonuses affect your AC, and not your hit/damage. After all you need to do damage to be DR. This is my take on it but you can always house rule as you see fit and balanced.

Remember that there is a significant difference in gold value between armor and weapons when enchanting them so...use that when you determine your decision with shield bashing.
