If a character gets different types of Damage Reduction from 2 sources (one racial and one from a class) how do they interact?

If he has DR 2/Adamantium and DR 1/- does he apply it situationally (not a word but you understand)?

I.E.: He gets DR2/Adm unless he's fighting an enemy with Adm weapons, in which case he just gets his DR1/-.... correct?

You are correct, he uses the one that is best for the situation. (i.e. DR 2 vs. non-adamantine weapons, DR 1 vs. them) Usually this is stated as they "overlap" instead of "stack."

Beamup is correct for most situations.

There are however a very very few creatures that have wierd "either or" DR.

A prime example is the Demon Babau
It's DR line reads:
"Damage reduction 10/cold iron or good".

This wording, with the OR means that if your weapon is either Cold Iron or Good aligned, they have no DR. It does not have to be both.

------------------------

This is different from the more typical DR line for the Balor which reads:
"Damage reduction 15/cold iron and good, "

This wording, with the AND means that if you weapon is Cold Iron but not good, they get the DR 15. To defeat the Balor's DR the weapon must both be Cold Iron and also be Good.

Note, for a really nasty combination, have the Balor cast Stoneskin. To ignore the DR the weapon must be Good, made of Cold Iron, and also made of Adamantine. It is very dificult to get a weapon to count as both Adamantine and also Cold Iron

Actually even in these cases, the principle holds. The "or" DRs are simply a more complex single DR than normal. In every single case, if you have two DRs, you use the best for the situation.

That is to say, DR x/y or z (or DR x/y and z) is not two different DRs overlapping, it is ONE DR. (Though DR x/y and z is mechanically identical to DR x/y and DR x/z overlapping, it's not technically the same thing.)
