Is there a medium melee weapon that does 2d8 damage?

I have been looking but have not found anything. :(

Exotic Weapon Proficieny (Bastard Sword) + one Large Bastard Sword = Two-Handed Melee Weapon doing 2d8, with no penalty.

EDIT: You can do this with other high-damage one-handers for even more damage.

There used to be the fullblade.

FULLBLADE, oh yeah! :fight!:

At least I have :chicken:

Huh? That's a -2 to hit for using a larger sized weapon.

Are you playing 3.0 or 3.5?

As far as a medium weapon that does 2d8 damage. No. That's too powerful and not in 3.5.

You can have larger sized weapons that deal 2d8 but you'll probrably need the monkey grip feat from Complete Warrior to use most of them.

what I say, is I oncie let a someone be a tauren (in my defence it was warcraft setting) and well he had a totem, which was basically a tree, that did 2d8.

Basically he dished out more damage then the rogue, he was a healer (which is a less combat oriented cleric.

Also, at around 16th level, the Monk's unarmed strikes do 2d8.

There is the sugliin in Frostburn, but it's an exotic reach weapon that deals 2d8 and takes a FULL-ROUND action to attack with it.

I keep going back and forth on its actual usefulness. There is a feat that allows for normal attacks, which makes things even more difficult.

I wouldn't say it's more complicated than having to take EWP for the Bastard Sword.

bastard sword = 1 handed exotic.
w/ profiency you can weild a large one two handed w/o penalty :shifty:

too bad i can't spell... :gah:

note: honestly i'd rather have vicious spiked gauntlets...especially if i have damage reduction and/or fast healing

The difference in damage between this and a greatsword (assuming comparable critical ranges) is 2; the greatsword averages 7, the suglin 9.

To attack normally with the suglin, you need two feats, the EWP and the feat for full attacks.

IMHO, two feats aren't worth +2 damage.

No. There is always (barring things like Powerful Build) a -2 penalty for using weapons made for creatures larger (or smaller) than you.

I see what you mean with the Exotic Weapon Proficiency for bastard sword, as it basically takes two feats to be truly effective while the bastard sword needs one. I'm just not sure it's worth the cost of two feats. Yes, having a full attack with a 2d8 reach weapon is impressive, but is it two feats worth of impressive? Usually, I find myself saying 'almost' more than 'yes.'

In my opinion, a 2d8 20/x2 exotic two-handed weapon is reasonably balanced. But WoTC has had plenty of opportunity to introduce such a weapon and hasn't, so that may show you what my opinion is worth. :)

I would consider a well written 2d8 20x2, no special powers to be a reasonable two handed medium sized exotic weapon.

The presences of the Bastard sword pretty much tells me that one handed is not reasonable.

I could see moving the average damage from 5.5 to 7(2d6) by giving up the 19-20x2. But I can't see moving it to 9(2d8).

Part of the problem is that if a Medium one handed weapon is 2d8, then suddenly Medium people can actually make reasonable use of Monkey Grip, something not possible before.

To make a one handed 2d8 exotic weapon, I would want some kind of disadvantage.

Possible fair disadvantages could include one of the following:

does not threaten
can not be used for full attacks more than one round in a row (standard attack, followed by full attack, repeat)
No strength bonus to damage at all.
Always takes a MEA to unsheath and if carreid unsheathed for more than 10 rounds you become fatigued.

Taking exotic weapon proficiancy bastard sword allows you to wield the weapon in one hand with no penalty, but to use a LARGE bastard sword you must take monkey grip and even then you still take a -2 penalty to your "to hit" roll, if you dont have monkey grip, you take a -4 to your "to hit" roll...

Exotic Weapon Proficieny (Bastard Sword) + one Large Bastard Sword = Two-Handed Melee Weapon doing 2d8, with no penalty.

What rules are you guys playing in? 3.5 specifically states you get a -2 when using a weapon that's designed for a larger character than you.

A cumulative -2 penalty applies on attack rolls for each size category of difference between the size of its intended wielder and the size of its actual wielder. If the creature isn’t proficient with the weapon a -4 nonproficiency penalty also applies.

A weapon’s size category isn’t the same as its size as an object. Instead, a weapon’s size category is keyed to the size of the intended wielder. In general, a light weapon is an object two size categories smaller than the wielder, a one-handed weapon is an object one size category smaller than the wielder, and a two-handed weapon is an object of the same size category as the wielder.

Every got that now? Good.

You kidding? That's weak. If a two-handed exotic weapon with no special abilities did 2d8 damage, it would have a critical of either 19-20/X2 or 20/X3. 2d8 20/X2 is balanced as a martial two-handed weapon with no special abilities. (Don't bring up the greatclub. It's the single worst weapon in the entire game. It'd be weak as a simple weapon.)

2d8 19-20x2 slashing and 2d6 18-20x2 slashing are the upper echelons of the exotic weapon spectrum. Some DMs might get a hair up thier rear about it, so adding a minor restriction (I use draw speed; i.e. Quick Draw doesn't apply to the weapon) may be needed.

In a 3.0 splat book (Masters of the Wild?) they had something like that, called a caber. Had a wonderful quote for the weapon section with it:

"He hit me, With A TREE!" -Dazed Krusk

As an aside, I'm pondering now researchig a spell that would increase the damage catagory of a weapon by one. I know I've seen a similar spell for bludgeoning weapons in Races of the Dragon.

The closest weapons I can think of are all exotics:

Fullblade, as Pres_man mentioned. I think it's most recent printing was Arms and Equipment guide or complete warrior. Don't remember.

Also in A+E guide was a nasty mace, I think it was called the warmace. I think it was 2d6 or 1d12, which is nice for a one handed weapon, even if it causes a -2 to AC.

In savage species they have the barbed chain. A 2d6 one handed medium weapon.

If you've got a nice strength, you can take Monkey Grip and then get yourself a Large Bastard Sword, it works nicely if you have the EWP already, because you can use it 'normally' in one hand.

If you've got a Strength score of at least 18, the -2 won't hurt your Attack Bonus at all, and having a 2d8 weapon you can use with a sheild is nice.

Of course, if you play a Half-Giant or Goliath, you get Powerful Build, and don't take any penalties at all.

Well, if your spending feats to get a better weapon, why not spend feats to use TWO awesome weapons. Like:

EWP Bastard Sword
TWF
Oversized TWF(Cadv)

And, there you have it! 1d10+str with 2 weapons, and only a -2 to hit on both. So, your looking at 2d10+1.5 str instead of 2d8+1.5 str. And, If you spend another 2 feats (which you should get too) You can do 2d10+2+1.5str with a -1 to hit. A level 4 fighter could do this, and have a feat to spare. (Monkeygrip?)

Uh friend, 1.5 strength multiplier only comes if your using two hands on a single weapon.

I still like the Bastard Swords as a TWF mainhand though, with a posioned Longknife or Dagger in the off hand. 1D10 from your main, and a chance to deal Con damage with your offhand.

But that's just me.

well, you see, you get 1x from your main hand, and .5x from off hand. 1+.5=1.5 So, that is where i got 1.5x. Do you see the light now?

Mmhm, But I thougth offhand strength pentalites went bye-bye when they Nerfed Ambidexterity into TWF.

Then again, I'm unfamiler with the Oversized TWF feat; I don't usually use two identical weapons in such a scenario: way too Drizzt Do'Overdone.

As long as you have the proper feats (EWP: Bastard Sword, Monkey Grip), you can weild a Large Bastard Sword with Strength 3.

You would only be able to move 5ft a round and will lose your Dex to AC, but you can still attack at your full BaB -2 with it. Strength in DnD does not affect your ability to wield a weapon, only how effective your attack will be.

A 1st level human warrior with strength 3, Monkey Grip and EWP: Bastard Sword has an awe inspiring (heh) melee attack bonus of -5 though, so he can't even reliably hit stationary objects with it... but technically, he *can* weild it and pray for a natural 20.

At third level, he'll take Weapon Focus and will at a MIGHTY -2.

Vaal, you have made a few errors. First, Monkey Grip requires a BAB of +5. Second, you need a Strength of 13+ to take EWP: Bastard Sword.

Well there is the Warmace in COmplete Warrior, which is 1d12 one handed exotic weapon. Gives you a -1 penalty to AC though cause it's "heavy"...In any case, there's no way to get 2d8 as a medium creature without spending feats or getting a pentalty to attacks, usually both...Monkey Grip a large greatsword to do 3d6 damage...Take exotic weapon proficiency, monkey grip, two-weapon fighting, and oversized two-weapon fighting, with a large Warmace in one hand and medium in off hand, get 3d6+str+1d12+.5 str on a full attack, albeit at -4/-2 to hit. Still, get style points for swinging around big hunks of metal. Go tempest, and reduce the penalties further...

Thats the first I've heard of the bastardsword thing, but the SRD confirms. That's just assinine. I can one hand a six pound heavy pick, but not a six pound bastard sword? What skid mark thought that one up?

A spear, which also weighs the same as a heavy pick, can only be wielded with two hands.

A heavy mace, which weighs the same as a greatsword is a simple one-handed melee weapon.

There are only four one-handed weapons that weigh less than the two-handed weapon that is the quarterstaff (club, short spear, rapier, and whip).

The heavy steel shield with a shield spike outwieghs every other weapon in the SRD, and it's a one-handed weapon. Even without the shield spike it still outweighs every weapon except an orc double axe, which weighs the same.

The designers apparently took more into account than just the weight of a weapon to determine how it can be wielded.

Ah, the mysteries of torque.

Actually, there's a cute "paradox" about it too. If a cleric with 13 Str takes EWP:bastard sword, there's no problem. But if he gets hit with a Str penalty, he loses the use of the feat, since he no longer meets the prereq. But that means he's no longer proficient with the weapon, and can't even wield it two-handed. Go figure.

Well, from the SRD:
Strength Bonus
When you hit with a melee or thrown weapon, including a sling, add your Strength modifier to the damage result. A Strength penalty, but not a bonus, applies on attacks made with a bow that is not a composite bow.

Off-Hand Weapon
When you deal damage with a weapon in your off hand, you add only ½ your Strength bonus.

And ambidexterity is a nerf that I support, because ambidexterity+monkeygrip means 2 TWF greatswords kinda characters, since amidexterity removed the off-hand.

A spear, which also weighs the same as a heavy pick, can only be wielded with two hands.
Bad design that annihilates the spear and shield style.

A heavy mace, which weighs the same as a greatsword is a simple one-handed melee weapon.
Heavy mace has a lower damage dice and is thus balanced as a simple weapon.

There are only four one-handed weapons that weigh less than the two-handed weapon that is the quarterstaff (club, short spear, rapier, and whip).
The quarter staff can also be made by walking up to a tree and saying 'craft:weapons smithing' upon which time the tree will explode into a shower of clubs and quarterstaves.

There are so very many problems with the quarterstaff, I can't even begin. First of all being that in actual use it can be both a reach and a double weapon.

The heavy steel shield with a shield spike outwieghs every other weapon in the SRD, and it's a one-handed weapon. Even without the shield spike it still outweighs every weapon except an orc double axe, which weighs the same.
I'm sorry, I was just laughing myself to tears over the idea of a spiked shield as a viable weapon instead of something akin to a swordbreaker or battering ram.

The designers apparently took more into account than just the weight of a weapon to determine how it can be wielded.
Vodka shots, I'm guessing. My trick works with the MUCH larger greatsword at a lower penalty and yet, through a completely out of guideline addition to the EWP feat, not with the hand and a half weapon.
