2h weapons and spell casting [Archive] - Wizards Community

10-02-06, 10:34 AM if a sorcerer or other spellcaster were to use a 2h weapon, could they still cast spells?

casting spells with a somantic component requires that you have a free hand. that i understand. can the player not hold the weapon in one hand while using the other to cast?

what are the restrictions/rulings on this?

10-02-06, 10:47 AM Yes, you can switch it to 1h and cast the spell.. you just can't attack with it that way.

(unless you have a special feat for that purpose, or the weapon itself allows for it)

Two handed weapons require two hands to attack with, not simply to hold them.

There is however one potential downside.

If you cast a Summoning spell or other spell with a 1 full round casting time, then for the entire round, you only have one hand on the weapon.

This means you can not use it to make AoO's, and can not benefit from any magical enchantment on the weapon.

And you don't gain a benefit from two-handed weapons in the case of a disarm attempt or something similar since you're not actually holding it in two hands.
