| SephDragoon01-27-07, 09:53 PM | Ok... so, we are just three characters, a dual wielding scimitar build, a large warforged hulking hurler, and me, a battle sorcerer daggerspell mage. We are all level 15, and we are fighting against what seems to be some relatively low level guys, but there are 300 of them. Now, giving ourselves up is not an option, the front of their fort had 4 guys still burning on stakes. The guys inside consist of paladins and warriors it seems, and no, we are not evil, but well, the warforged said some bad things, and now they want our heads. How do we fight that many of them though without killing them? This is the biggest problem. We don't want to kill the paladins or soldiers, but they want to kill us. From the sound of it, they can't hit any of us, because my brother commented, none of the soldiers even have the AB to hit his AC. So only nat 20's are going to hit us, but we are being very limited in the ways we fight if we don't fight to kill. Does anyone have any ideas? Diplomacy has failed, so has bluff. I can run because I can fly, and I can bring our fighter with us, but I can't even pick up our warforged, so he would be on his own. Any suggestions would be apreciated. |
| Dragoloth01-27-07, 10:23 PM | If the opponents are all very low level and you want to run than run. You and the fighter can fly away while the forged runs. If they cant hit the forged they can't hurt him. I assume he has a high strength and can probably bullrush past most opposition. Does he have admn. body and what is his DR? More info might help more. What other classes do you all have if any? |
| Gendar Manyspell01-27-07, 10:28 PM | It would help to know what your spell selection was. But I have another thing to add. I don't see paladins wanting to take your head for saying something, unless they are in some type of dictatorship, where saying something is punishable by death. You could also see if maybe their was some service that you could do for them, in exchange for some reduced sentence. If fighting is the only way to go, have fighters doing subdual damage, as for your PC again it would be helpful to know your spell list. |
| SephDragoon01-27-07, 10:30 PM | Hm... the problem mostly is that we can't run away, because we have to get across this river. If we turned back, I have no clue what we would do. Yes, he has admn body, and that one that makes him immune to crits. He is a Barbarian/Hulking Hurler/Warhulk, our fighter is a fighter/swashbuckler/dervish/weapons master, and I am a Spelltheif/Battle Sorcerer/Daggerspell Mage/Master of the Unseen Hand. The problem is, I have no good non-lethal spells. Being a battle mage, I mostly blow stuff up. I can fly (not cast, i had a graft), cast greater invisibility, I can't teleport, I have no wall spells... in fact, I am rethinking alot of my spell choices right now >_<. |
| SephDragoon01-27-07, 10:32 PM | It would help to know what your spell selection was. Carrying any technology from this one area is punishable by death, and our warforged started talking about it... so we are kinda screwed. |
| Whisper_Swiftblade01-27-07, 10:33 PM | if the warforged does not have imp unarmed strike start punching people out with the sub damage. If the twfighter is tough enuff let him try his hand at it too, while you fly above and asist with what spells you can. honestly if you do this right at your levels you can probally win. by the way, where is this takeing place, if you can find a bottelnecked area to take a stand in do so. |
| Morgotho01-27-07, 10:35 PM | I'm making a few assumptions here, but eh, what the heck... Step 1. have warforged hurl the fighter away from battle Step 2. cast 'Reduce Person' on the warforged (hope you've got a scroll. not something I expect a sorceror to have picked out) Step 3. cast 'Fly' Step 4. pick up now medium sized warforged Step 5. flee away and meet up with the fighter (probably hanging from a tree somewhere) This technique will work much better if the fighter has a Ring of Feather Fall |
| Dragoloth01-27-07, 10:56 PM | Cast greater invisibality on the forged and have him tank through dealing subdual dmg while you fly the fighter overhead watching the forges progress. If you have any spells that can stun or dazzle use them to clear his path. Good luck and please post the results of your session. |
| Lia Nightdemon01-27-07, 10:59 PM | if they really low level greater cleave!!! |
| Darth Sephiroth01-27-07, 11:06 PM | If you're leveling up first and have access to a feat, take the frightful presence feat from the Draconomicon |
| Silverthumb12801-27-07, 11:08 PM | if they really low level greater cleave!!! No, he doesn't want to kill them! How much gold is available to the party? If you've got enough, just get em out of the way and pay for their resurrections, that's what I'd do. |
| runestar01-27-07, 11:11 PM | No merciful weapons?:P |
| SephDragoon01-27-07, 11:16 PM | Hm... actually, although the paladins will be immune to fear, the warforged does have Ki Shout. I guess that will work on the soldiers. Hm... so, lots of subdual, and ki shout. That's a good idea so far. Actually, I don't think it would be too terrible to just fight without improved unnarmed strike. If they can't hit us the attacks of opportunity will be minimal. And really, I have very few spells that won't outright kill them. The ones that I can use that won't kill anyone: True Strike, Obscuring Mist, Shield, Mirror Image, Greater Mage Armor, and Greater Invisibility. None of those are offensive. Oh, and Summon Monster III... |
| itwasntme01-27-07, 11:18 PM | Hm bluff again I mean we once was in a situation where we had to Fight a Very hard battle or keep bluffing Ie it ended up like this with our diplomate guy : diplomate : Im not lieing! *Buff check* : Guy : *Sense motive check makes it* Yes You ARE! : Diplomate : Im not lieing ANYMORE! *Bluff check* :Guy : *Sense motive check* ... Yes you are! : Diplomate : Ok ok This time im Realy not lieing! *Bluff check* : Guy : *Sense motive check* Oh ok so your telling me the truth now? Yes it was lame but it was the most epic bluff our way past them forgot how we where able to do it but it was kinda like that |
| BluEnigma01-27-07, 11:22 PM | This technique will work much better if the fighter has a Ring of Feather Fall Don't worry, falling damage caps at 20d6. |
| SephDragoon01-27-07, 11:25 PM | Don't worry, falling damage caps at 20d6. And he does have a ring of feather fall, but I have no reduce person. Besides, it wouldn't work on a warforged, it only works on humanoids, and warforged are constructs. |
| Whisper_Swiftblade01-27-07, 11:25 PM | The ones that I can use that won't kill anyone: True Strike, Obscuring Mist, Shield, Mirror Image, Greater Mage Armor, and Greater Invisibility. None of those are offensive. use the mage armor to protect, cast the invisibility so your foes NEVER hit, sheild's use is obvious, and save obscuring mist as a plan for retreat if things go wrong. |
| SephDragoon01-27-07, 11:26 PM | Ah, mer... I added Summon Monster III, and I forgot about Web. Those are spell-like abilities (hence I forgot them). |
| Whisper_Swiftblade01-27-07, 11:29 PM | Ah, mer... I added Summon Monster III, and I forgot about Web. Those are spell-like abilities (hence I forgot them). those are both good to have, only downside is that the summoned critter might kill someone. |
| The_sleeper101-28-07, 12:18 AM | Change them to a duel, there best 10 combatants in a fair fight they use what ever weapons they want and you use only your fists no spells. If you win you go free and take no tech with you and if not you will be dead with no chance of killing the enemy. It would be win win for them. |
| obsidianrose01-28-07, 12:21 AM | Now, do these 300 soldiers have a leader by the name of Leonidas and are they holed up at a mountain pass, wielding shields and spears with phalanx fighting? Oh wait, they have to be outnumbered for that to work. If you can get them bottlenecked, it'll be an easy fight. |
| RLRapp01-28-07, 12:26 AM | Actually the warforged can cross the river. He doesn't need t breath so he just need to walk in. |
| Garonak01-28-07, 09:50 AM | Someone's already posted the solution: Cast Greater Invisbility on the Warforged and have him run away. Then fly away with the fighter. Done. |
| Max the Immortal01-28-07, 12:39 PM | I concur that you can run away. Cast Fly, pick up the fighter, and let the warforged hoof it. Warforged are good runners; since they never become fatigued, they can sprint indefinitely. Just hope the soldiers don't get in too many lucky shots with ranged weapons. |
| Novacat01-28-07, 12:49 PM | You gotta be Spartans (http://www.apple.com/trailers/wb/300/hd/). |
| PhaedrusXY01-28-07, 12:49 PM | How is crossing a river a problem for two characters that can fly and one that doesn't need to breathe? |
| Nezkrul01-28-07, 01:48 PM | non-lethal substitution metmagic; +1 spell level to turn all damage dealt by the spell into non-lethal damage; its something I take every time I play a warmage. |
| penchant01-28-07, 03:14 PM | OK, I would take a completely different stance. A death sentence for talking about removing technology? People being burnt at the stake outside? Siege the castle, tear down the gate, ursurp the government and instate a just society with your characters as kings. This would be a Neutral good act. If they truly can't stop you then you will turn the tide. Seriously. Of course you might cause your DM to tear at his hair while shouting, ? A large size Adamantine Warforged doing a movethrough on a city gate. Now that's fun! |
| HellflameArcanite01-28-07, 03:27 PM | This is where area effect magic shines. A well-placed fireball will take out everyone in its radius, while your warforged may only be able to take out one opponent/turn (unless he has cleave or great cleave). However, running may be the best option. I believe that your DM may not have read the DMG too well, as it says that massive numbers of low levels do not always compensate for massively high-leveled characters. |
| SephDragoon01-28-07, 03:49 PM | We actually weren't supposed to fight these people, but my DM decided that he would play any situation out how an NPC would react, even if that meant that they would attack us. And these guys are religious nuts, technology = the devil to them. We were supposed to play today, but we aren't, so we'll be playing tuesday instead. I will post the results. Hell, we may end up running or just killing everyone there. I just don't like the idea of possibly taking an alignment penalty because I slaughtered a ton of guards (however unlikely it may be), or getting hunted down later for it by guys who ARE powerful. P.S. I always knew we could run, but the reason we don't cross the river is, evidently there is something down there that would prevent the warforged from doing so. My DM has warned us against it. He COULD do it, but I doubt it is a good idea if the DM is saying, "You really don't want to do that." |

I just don't like the idea of possibly taking an alignment penalty because I slaughtered a ton of guards (however unlikely it may be), or getting hunted down later for it by guys who ARE powerful. I might be wrong, but I still think you can take them with the unarmed strikes, the warforged ki-shouts to start things off, then he and the two weapon fighter start knocking out foes while you put web to use in takeing out some more enimies, if things start to go sour pick up the fighter, turn the warforged invisible and run. if they are all lv1s they might not even stand a chance. |
| SephDragoon01-28-07, 04:04 PM | Heh, well, all of the suggestions have been helpful, and the course of action will really be determined in the moments before the battle begins. If they WANT to kill us, then its an all out battle, if they are reluctant, either scared or just not wanting to do it but they have to because of their laws, then I just want to knock them out. And if we really could end up getting owned, we run. |
| WinDReiN01-28-07, 05:48 PM | How long does it take for characters to become exhausted and unable to fight any more? |
| Nezkrul01-28-07, 05:57 PM | Are you able to cast the Fly spell? If so, you really only need to cast it on the Warforged, have him pick you and the fighter up, and simply fly over the enemy - preferably after you see invis/greater invis everyone. Fly's weight limit is based on the carrying capacity of the spell's target. |
| Sakaki2201-28-07, 06:00 PM | Got Heroes of Battle? Use rules in it to march up to the armies field commanders, smack them around, and demoralize the rest. I kinda have a funny image in my head of a huge warforged marching straight through waves of people, ignoring all attacks and blows, to backhand one Paladin off his horse, then turning around to a hundred people going  |
| Whisper_Swiftblade01-28-07, 06:05 PM | How long does it take for characters to become exhausted and unable to fight any more? warforged never tire, and if you consider the potential number of foes the kia-shout can take out in a single turn, the fight may not be long at all. |
| SephDragoon01-29-07, 01:29 AM | Are you able to cast the Fly spell? So I never learned it... another oversight, but well, not much I can do with a limited spell list >_< |
| Nezkrul01-29-07, 09:10 AM | Get a Wand of Fly :D |
| Red_Rabbit01-29-07, 09:15 AM | I'd like to know what the Warforge said to upset that many paladins? Paladins with there Lawful good nature it's not likely Diplomacy would fail. If you really don't want to kill there do Subdual dmg it's only a -4 to hit, but atleast you won't kill them. The Rabbit |
| SephDragoon01-29-07, 04:14 PM | I'd like to know what the Warforge said to upset that many paladins? Paladins with there Lawful good nature it's not likely Diplomacy would fail. If you really don't want to kill there do Subdual dmg it's only a -4 to hit, but atleast you won't kill them. The Rabbit He said a series of things that I managed to cover for except the last one. And yes, you are going to find out, my little brother is an idiot... "Yeah, our guide and us got into a fight." - this piqued their interest, which I explained away as an arguement, not a fist fight. "No, we totally beat the crap out of them!" - by this point I am explaining it as an arguement that got out of hand, and losing credibility fast cus of my idiot brother. "But you totally slit that guy's throat!" - now I am telling them he is an idiot who likes fighting so much he's just looking to start one. I finally manage to get them to calm down, swords are put away and everyone sits down. "Hey, do you remember when we were at that ship in the mournelands, and got this cool cannon?" - 1 million points to the person who can name what campaign setting, the current country, and the reason why we are about to have 300 men trying to kill us >_<. |
| HellflameArcanite01-29-07, 06:03 PM | When the DM says that you don't want to do that, that is giving you knowledge that your characters do not have. This encourages metagame thinking and is BAD. |
| SephDragoon01-29-07, 06:06 PM | Except, when your DM feels it is apropriate to warn you, it is probably for a damn good reason, and therefore, in the spirit that this is JUST A GAME, and we haven't gotten to the point of dressing up in foam armor, because we are SO scared of going ooc, I'd say its aproriate... |
| Grod_The_Giant01-29-07, 06:16 PM | invisibility on everyone fly out blow all your summon spells summoning demons/devils Hope that the paladins aren't stick-up-the-***** type paladins (like Miko from OOTS); and that they abandon you to take out the "demon invasion" fly back to the party grab the fighter let the warforged invisibly run out I guess there's some reason you can't use fly on the warforged. |
| SephDragoon01-29-07, 06:22 PM | Like I've said many times, I don't know the fly spell, I fly naturally. But even that escape plan won't work. I guess I should have said so earlier, but I am using the recharge variant of magic from the unearthed arcana. With a few tweaks for balance in a campaign where I am one of few using it. But the issue is, I cannot greater invisibility everyone because I would have to wait for the spell to recharge. Meh, We can run regardless if we have to, but I'm not keen on running from a fight. Frankly, the more I have thought about it, if the paladins want to strike first blood, because I will not attack first, then we'll slaughter them. And that's that. |
| Tony Vargas01-29-07, 09:04 PM | Doing non-lethal damage is as simple as taking a -4 penalty to hit. Shouldn't slow you guys down much to do that - you can even 'great cleave' off of KO'ing someone. Lack of non-lethal spells are a problem for you, but if you have Web that should help a lot in isolating/subduing a portion of the enemy force. Once you beat down enough of them, the rest should give up - I'd say start with the paladins or whoever the officers or leader types are. In addition to taking the penalty to inflict non-lethal damage, you can also Disarm or sunder weapons, or trip enemies as they aproach you - delaying tactics while you try to convince them to give up, that also serve to demonstrate how overmatched they are. Another option would be to stand asside and let the 300 mook try to take on the one character who actually ****** them off... |
| Snicker01-30-07, 12:14 AM | Doing non-lethal damage is as simple as taking a -4 penalty to hit. Listen to this man. If you're level 15, and they're a bunch of first-level mooks, a -4 isn't going to slow you down at all, especially not the fighter. The warforged and the fighter could literally knock the entire army unconscious; nonlethal damage brings people down just as fast as lethal damage, and you take no penalty on that. At your level, you probably do have untouchable ACs for their level. About the only one I'd be afraid for is you; a mage-ish type character without spells could die of a thousand cuts. The fighter types are probably invincible. Of course, if they aren't just level-one mooks, the danger increases enormously. |
| SephDragoon01-30-07, 02:28 AM | They weren't first level, I know that, because my arcane sight could tell that they could cast spells (the paladins could). But, I have more AC than nay of them actually, by 3 points. I'm not too worried though, because well, its over. Very anti-climactic. The leader of the army ended up being the guy that I brefriended at the front gate (talk about a commander willing to do everything his underlings do), and well, he stopped the others and let us go, assuming we never come back. So, we went on our merry way. Kind of disapointed actually... I wanted to see if we could do it. |
| Aggrenox01-30-07, 02:31 AM | I hope your Dm rembers the assist another option. I say, Warn the soldiers that you will kill anyone who enters 10 ft. of you. Then do so, then tell them again, then repeat until the horde gives up, or realizes that you are willing to talk. |
| Yokomohoyo01-30-07, 05:00 AM | 300 soldiers? Just intimidate them and then cast a fireball and threaten them that they will be next if they insist on attacking. |
| HellflameArcanite01-30-07, 05:12 PM | Were you in Thrane, Eberron? I know you were in Eberron (warforged) but I'm not sure if Thrane is luddite. Although it would have paladins... |
| SephDragoon01-30-07, 07:21 PM | Yeah, we're in thrane, carrying cyre tech we salvaged >_<. |
| Tolby01-30-07, 08:56 PM | cast fly and invis on yourself and tje fighter.. have the forge run into the river...he doesn't need to breathe |
| SephDragoon01-30-07, 09:12 PM | Ok... first off, I could have sworn that I have been repeating myself... I don't know the fly spell... the river was dangerous to the forged, regardless of breathing. And it is over now, they let us go without a fight... well, the commander let us go, the soldiers wanted to draw and quarter us. But its over >_<. |
| Fencerboy01-30-07, 09:23 PM | <> OK, people, READ THE THREAD AND ALL THE POSTS before you post please!!! That way, the same thing (like run the WF through the river and fly w/ the fighter) doesn't get repeated 9999 times. 1. there is something in the river or the DM is lying to trick them so they don't ruin the encounter; 2. He can't cast fly, he has grafted wings; 3. IT'S OVER!!! Meaning that any new posts will just be speculation on what could have been done, and don't just repeat everyone else... PLEASE!!! </:rant:> |
| Fencerboy01-30-07, 09:25 PM | OK, I just spent so long composing that awesome  of doom that I missed the fact that he had first :( , so ignore mine. ;) |
| SephDragoon01-30-07, 09:42 PM | Actually, you said it better than me at any rate. I don't mind if people continue to speculate, heck, even I am doing that (though not posting any of it). It would have been an epic battle, regardless of ACTUAL difficulty. Just please be aware of what has already been said before you post please. |
| BlackFiend01-31-07, 10:40 AM | The way to defeat them is very simple, man. Refuse to be hit. Denials. There is nothing that says you must kill them. They are no threat to you, and you are no threat to them. Battle your way across by denial. Only kill those who block your direct way out. Someone crowds you and you can't bull rush through them, beat them down with non-lethals and move on. Only attack when something is in your way. As a DM, I would attempt to trip and grapple you the heck out of you. You will be denied your dex, and at a +4 to attacks, and +2 from flanking. So thats at least a +8 to hit, may be more. If your DM is evil like myself...I suggest you surrender, and make a break. |
| Aggrenox01-31-07, 04:13 PM | <> OK, people, READ THE THREAD AND ALL THE POSTS before you post please!!! | SephDragoon01-31-07, 05:15 PM | Wow, short attention span there man? *puts a safety helmet on him* For your own good special man! |
| Grave_Accomplice01-31-07, 08:11 PM | nevermind. |
| Snicker02-01-07, 09:51 PM | 300 soldiers? Just intimidate them and then cast a fireball and threaten them that they will be next if they insist on attacking. Sounds like a great way to get 300 readied actions to pincushion you with arrows. |
| Lamorake02-01-07, 10:55 PM | Speculation of what could have happened: I agree with some previous posters, if I were DMing I would use the assist option for grapple, nets, tripping weapons, bull rushing to seperate the 3 to be able to surround. Having 8 lvl 1 players surround you and all assist with grapple can be formidable. With 300 of them, there's many, many chances for crits vs non-immune players (in otherwords, everyone but the war-forged). It would be a most boring, long and drawn out battle that would leave everyone numb and tired of playing if you rolled everything out, though. I'd say the DM didn't want to go through the mess and drag you all with him down that path. |
| Gnomish Zombie02-01-07, 11:56 PM | Well, here's my take on it. (if they would have tried to fight) Everything depends on the terrain, how far away you are from the ennemies, how tight their formation is, and if you win initiative. Assuming the worst (they are close to you, and it is impossible to run from where you are to the other side of the bridge in one round by winning ini :P ) Round 1: Your first priority is to avoid being swarmed, or pincushioned. That might involve moving back at first. I'm assuming you can't bottleneck them, so the best thing to do is get some distance between you and the bulk of the swarm. I'm assuming they have 20ft movement at best, or few horsemen (which can be dealt with separately with subdual damage). To avoid being pincushionned, use obsuring mist at the end of your round. The soldiers should then move towards the mist, as your actions alert them that you are not cooperating nor negotiating anymore. (or they were already partially on you before you acted). At this point, there shoudn't be many of them around you. The mist should also help in slowing them down (half-speed since they can't see) or cast web if it blocks at least 280 or so of the guards from attacking you. I think you can take on 20-30 guards without any threat whatsoever. Round 2: Cast improved invis on the warforged. Have him either sneak or run out of the mist by any road which seem the best to avoid the guards. Alternatively, have him shout once if you are hard-pressed, so you can all make good your escape. He'll be making noise, of course, but with luck, so will they (there's 300 of them, for God's sake). In the worst case only those closest to him should be able to hear him. Round 3+ You can now fly out with the fighter, or cause other types of diversions, such as casting other obsuring mists to widen the mist, or summoning a handful of celestial riding dogs (only if you feel confident you can keep them from attacking), or other weak summon. The goal is to gain time for your warforged to either make it to the bridge or get out of the way. Just try not to get swarmed whilst doing it. The goal is either to get them away from the bridge so the warforged can more easily shout/knock out/bull rush the opposition there, and be on his merry way, or just to move past them fast (if time, read:"spell duration", is pressing). Once he's cleared the bridge, fly out with the fighter, and block the bridge with web. You might have to web them before if the terrain is suitable for it, and if they start noticing and swarming the warforged. Also, at lvl 15, the other players have better have some tactical options that you didn't list (in the form of items, potions, etc.). Else I might be tempted to call them idiots. I'll just assume that those options would also result in the death of guards... but come on, no potions of fly? I have those most of the time from lvl 6 on or so... what about potions of haste, etc.? Speed, diversions, and disruption should win this one with a minimal amount of wounded on both sides. |
| SephDragoon02-02-07, 04:53 AM | If you want to know the original plan, should we have gone all out... first round I would have been making the firepit in the center of the fort (yes, we were in a fort, surrounded on all sides), causing the fire to scatter around. This would have been a great distraction at the very least. Next is getting in tight formation. I would have probably had the two get around me to block off attacks (and btw, I am the only one with no crit protection. The warforged is immune, and the fighter has moderate fortification). From the center I could summon, lay out moderate damaging spells (though I have few AoE spells, something I plan on remedying with dragon breath next level, which is so close I can taste it now). I would have lended a hand with my telekinetic powers, spreading fire, fighting with weapons when I could, and generally wreaking havok instead of trying to deal damage. I have no doubt that the two warriors could deal out plenty of damage. But with me between them, I should have been able to heal both (don't ask how I heal the warrior... but yes, I do have repair damage spells for the warforged). I think it would have been a long battle too, but I had a trick stored up for the leader. Once he revealed himself, cast and hold vampiric touch in my dagger (daggerspell mage), and cast true strike (cus I have only cleric level AB, being a battle sorcerer), get in range and use blade of blood, and arcane strike. Well, regardless, its going to deal alot of damage all in one strike. It should have demoralized the enemy enough, coupled with the fact that we should have by then taken out a considerable amount of enemies, and wreaked enough havok, the tide should have eventually switched, and allowed us to go on the offensive, slaughtering them all. So, that was the plan... sort of anyways. |

| SephDragoon02-03-07, 01:32 AM | Bah, we prefer to stay and fight. Besides, I've found we need other potions far more. While I can heal us somewhat, I am no cleric. Remove Curse, Remove Disease, Remove Poison, Restoration, etc... all seem like very useful potions now after getting con drained a few times... and me diseased. Really, we are very ill prepared period... we should have a cleric, but no one wanted to play one... We need another party member willing to play one I think >_<. |
