| EmperorTippy11-07-05, 04:37 PM | How much material is required to make a full body, hooded cloak for a person 6'8" tall and of medium weight? I would perfer an answer in sq. feet if possible. Now my second question: What is the cost of mirthril per pound? Third question: What is the craft: Metalwroking DC to draw wire of excellent quallity that is the width of thread? and a width about triple the width of the thread? Thanks in advance for the answer that I am sure will be satisfactory ;) |

For the cloak, probably 30 square feet would be reasonable (a 5 ft by 6 ft piece). If you wanted a more finished look or stylish cut, I bet could get up to double that. This also doesn't count the liner, since I assume you're thinking about mithril fabric with either a fabric liner or none. About the wire drawing... who really knows? I guess I'd make it a DC of 20, like a masterwork item. |

I don't have answer right now as I am at work and they frown on bringing D&D books to meetings but I will probably post them when I get home if no ones beat me too it. Of course IIRC the prices for special materials are never given by the pound, so you would be relegated to extrapolating a cost per pound based on the costs for items given. As for the cloak, the simplest way I can think of is to assume the person is a cylender and just calculate the surface area, this estimate will likely be a little high but that could account for trimmings and waste material since know one ever buys exactly the right amount of material. Therefore assuming a highth of 6'8" or 6.66' and a man of average breadth accross the shoulders of approximately 2' we get the formula 3.141(pi)*1(the radius of a 2' diameter circle)*6.66 (the highth of the man) for a total of 21sqft, anyone with more experiance as a seamster (or Seamstress) than myself have a better estimate? Metalworking DC to draw a wire is going to be entirely a GM call. Were it my game I would make a rough estimate based on the thickness of the wire desired and then modifiy for the ductility of the mineral (Copper and Gold being very ductile and steel far less) ect. for a wire the thinkness of a modern thread I would give a DC somewhere in the neiborhood of 80-100. Edit: Jaelis, I've got to say 20 seems incredibly low, I haven't heard any examples of drawing a wire that thin being accomplished until well into the industrial revolution with the aid of advanced smelting and metalurgy, hence why I estimated the DC to be in the range near impossible for a character of non-magical midevil means. Now seriously why did you request this information? I smell chikanery and shinaningans. One final note, whats with the hostility in the thread title? I mean I know you want help with these issues but rudeness is not the way to engender people to help you, I'm sorry but that just gets my hackles up. |
| EmperorTippy11-07-05, 06:43 PM | The "hostility" was a joke and I'm slightly peeved sorry for that. I want the info for a few reasons. First a PC in one of my campaigns wanted to make his own cloak and I needed to no about how much fabric he would need for this so that I could calculate price and such. As for the drawing of the wire I know that it was done with gold and silver but I was wondering about the DC because I wanted this master craftsman dude to make a suit of MIthril clothes for a dwarf king but I know that if I do the PCs will want to do the same thing so I want a realistic DC as I don't care either way if they can make the mithril thread so long as its about the right DC. The cost per pound of Mithril is because one of my PC's has a Mithril door and he wants to know its value. Heres the Wikipedia link to wire drawing which seems to imply that it was a reasonable standard pratice to draw wire back in D&D esque times. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wire Oh and with the DM guide implying that Mithril is "as hard as iron" and is "worked like steel" it doesn't seem to far fetched to decide that Mithril Wire could be drawn that is quite thin. Its being a litle thicker than orginaly intended may be needed though. |
