3.0 vs. 3.5 AoO [Archive] - Wizards Community

I'm currently playing in a game run by a DM using a combination of 3.0 and 3.5 rules (mostly 3.5 character classes and PrC options with 3.0 combat rules).

The DM (using 3.0) sez that I will provoke an attack of opportunity if my character moves into a space threatened by an opponent. I know 3.5 says that an AoO is provoked when you leave a threatened space but not for entering a threatened space. Was this a change from 3.0 to 3.5?

Is he right about the 3.0 rules for AoO?

09-26-05, 09:31 PM No, it's basically identical. They changed the description because it was a bit misleading and redundant.
They said in 3.0, "moves through (not simply into) or out of a threatened area" which can confuse some, because 'area' is not really a game term.
They now use the term 'moving out of a threatened square', in 3.5, 'a square' is a clearly a game term and easy to understand.

09-26-05, 09:42 PM There was a change in phrasing of what provoked a movement-related AoO, something like:

3.0: "leaving, or moving within, a threatened area"

3.5: "moving out of a threatened square"

The meaning, however is identical. You don't provoke an AoO for 'engaging' an enemy - that is, moving into the first square of it's threatened area - in either version of the game.

3.0s': "moving within a threatened area" just means leaving a square an opponent threatens and going into another one the same opponent threatens.

It becomes redundant when you say "leaving a threatened square" provokes.

A lot of people (like your DM) confuse the term within with into.
