| Harmor09-12-04, 05:32 PM | Lets say you're sized Small and you are fighting a Huge creature. Can you, without the Giantbane feat in Complete Warrior climb onto a Huge creature? Climb DC 25? Balance DC 25 to say on each round? I guess this is like in LoTR when Legolas climb on the back of a cave troll and fights on its back? I just want to climb on a huge creature and have be able to move with it when it does and maybe it have a harder time to hit me (I'm on its back or clinging to its leg or something). Any ideas? |
| primemover00309-12-04, 06:56 PM | Well even if you can climb on the creature larger than yourself, it can freely attack into it's own space... I'd make it a feat to gain cover against it's own attacks! |
| Harmor09-12-04, 07:12 PM | Right, Giantbane already does that. What I would like to know is if you can climb aboard without the feat? For example: Halfling Outriders can stand on their mount with no penalty to attacks with only a DC 10 or 15 Ride check I believe. But if you don't have levels in Halfling Outride you need to make a DC 40 Ride check. That's what I would like to know. |
| primemover00309-12-04, 08:08 PM | I could've sworn I've seen it covered somewhere in an article... but it wasn't the rules of the game Movement series... |
| Harmor09-12-04, 08:47 PM | I might had missed it...I'll reread the articles. |
| Fixxxer09-12-04, 09:46 PM | According to AEG's "Dragons" (a 3rd party book, but a very good one), you can climb a dragon so long as it's two size catagories larger than you with a simple Climb check (that has a nice high DC). So long as you can manage to stay up there (not easy), the beast loses it's DEX bonus to AC against you. |
| Bartleby_GoC09-13-04, 02:29 PM | It sounds like a grapple check. Probably use grapple to hang on once the climb check is made. The critter would still be effected by the AC penalty for size and natural armor wouldn't effect the grapple (though it would effect further attacks for damage). Loss of Dex AC mod sounds right, though if you want to maintainthe grapple, you'd lose your Dex AC mod too. Just like a grapple. Bartleby |
| Harmor09-13-04, 03:04 PM | I have a -4 to my grapple checks and something 3 size categories taller has a +12 I think... Me trying to grapple this creature would be nearly impossible. Is there another way? |
| Dlgood09-13-04, 04:20 PM | Me trying to grapple this creature would be nearly impossible. It should be. Imagine a halfling trying to climb aboard a rampaging Rhino in the middle of a fight. Does that seem like a particularly easy task? Unless the monster is just going to stand there and let your character mount it, climbing aboard would be extremely hard. Perhaps, a favorable DM would allow you to make it an Opposed Dex instead of Opposed Str -- which would generally favor the small character. But unless the character had specifically trained or practiced the technique (i.e. spent a feat slot) I wouldn't grant that. |
| Harmor09-13-04, 06:44 PM | Ok...Giantbane it is. |
