I am wondering how to spend the 3,000gp I have on my new char. He is a beguiler 1/wizard 2. All the good items are too expensive, so I thought about just scribing a bunch of 1st level spells with the money. Any better suggestions?

A +1 Mithral Shirt costs 2100gp. You can further enchant it to get the twilight property so that the arcane spell failure reaches 0%.
Ring of Prot +1 costs 2000
Cloak of Resistance costs 1000 (can never get to high saves)
Wands range from 750-lots, but you can get used ones (take the dmg cost, divide it by 50 and multiply it with the number of charges you want.
Other than that: scrolls

I am wondering how to spend the 3,000gp I have on my new char. He is a beguiler 1/wizard 2.Do I sense a desire to go into Ultimate Magus? It's certainly a reasonable career progression.

All the good items are too expensive, so I thought about just scribing a bunch of 1st level spells with the money. Any better suggestions?I'd guess you have 5 or 6 Wizard spells already - the exact number depends on starting Int. Go through allowable books and get a list of the good 1s level spells. You can buy scrolls and scribe for a total cost of 125gp per spell, unless there is a costly component. Make a list of spells you want, and buy 4 of them. That's 500gp down.

While I'm thinking of costly components, you should take Identify as a spell from your wizard class features, because a scroll of Identify costs 125gp all on its own.

A few potions of CLW might go down well. So would a wand of Shield. Ok the wand-cast spell lasts only a minute. Just use it liberally.

A Cloak of Resistance +1 will give you +1 to your saves. That may not be much for Will, but you have +0 for both Fort and Ref (ability bonuses excluded) and that +1 may make a difference.

That lot together will set you back 2,500. A couple more spells, other starting adventurer's gear, and about 50-100gp in your pocket (you might want to pay a fee or bribe, and the setting may have laws against vagrancy).

Dabriel,

My advice... don't worry too much about 1st-level spells at lower levels. Spending large amounts of coin placing spells into your spell book isn't that useful since you can only cast such a small number per day.

My advice...

1. Invest in a small number of 2nd-level scrolls or even a 3rd-level scroll. Say three scrolls of web or something. Such scrolls will have a much bigger affect on combat. The 3rd-level scroll is more like a security blanket -- you use it if you need to, but otherwise save it for future scribing.

2. Look at a few of the lower level wands. Magic missile, mage armor, ray of enfeeblement, or some such. Make heavy use of them over the next few levels.

3. Buy some potions. Start a collection of potions from one of the other classes -- cure light wounds, etc.

4. Look at some minor items which are useful, but not expensive.

5. Save a good chunk of change. Use it to buy future scrolls and future scribing into your spellbook. Very shortly you'll discover 2nd-level spells and you'll these will have much more impact in your spellbooks.

For example:

1x Wand of mage armor (750gp)
2x Scrolls of web (300gp)
2x Scrolls of scorching ray (300gp)
2x Potions of cure light wounds (100gp)
1x Potion of disquise self (50gp)
1x Potion of hide from animals (50gp)
1x Potion of sleep (50gp)
1x Continual flame spell cast on a silvered dagger (120gp)

Which leaves you with 1,280gp in left over. Next level, use it to scribe a 2nd-level scroll into your spellbook. It is always nice to have cash on hand.

Thanks for the advice. And yes, he will be an Ultimate Magus eventually. Such a cool concept.
