| FrostHammer02-08-07, 07:12 PM | Ok, I'm a Raptorian and in the air. Can I take a 5 foot step like normal? |
| RavenDrake02-08-07, 07:45 PM | Err.... maybe. Creatures with full flight have manuverablity ratings (clumsy, poor, average, good, perfect). Creatures with at least good manuverability have no minimum foward speed and can hover. Creatures with average or lower manuverabilty have to maintain a certain speed to stay aloft(see the ariel manuvering chart (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/movement.htm#movingInThreeDimensions) in the SRD for more details.) Basically, unless you can hover, you must maintain foward momentum and cannot make positional adjustments. Creatures with Good or better flight (or the Hover feat) are able to hover in place, and can make such adjustments(in fact, they can do so in any direction, even straight up or down). I'm not completely conversant with raptorans, but I recall they do not get flight immediately, but instead have some sort of gliding talent till they get to a certain level. If that's the case, then you'll have to consult the rules for the raptorans gliding to determine how it interacts with ariel manuverability if your character does not have full flight yet. |
| FrostHammer02-08-07, 10:30 PM | Glide and flight both at average. I plan to take Improved maneuverability to get it to Good. So as lon as I can hover, I can take 5-foot steps? good... |
| RavenDrake02-08-07, 11:24 PM | Someone who has something like Savage Species where flying moment is covered more indepth might be able to correct me, but as far as I know you can perform most ground based movements while using an alternate travel mode. If you take Improved Manuverability or Hover with your Raptoran(assuming they have average manuverability now) then you should be able to hover and thus make use of the positional step (5ft step). |
| FrostHammer02-08-07, 11:27 PM | I see no reason to take Hover when I already have average maneuverability. Taking Improved Man gives you hovering and much more. |
| Despana02-09-07, 03:36 PM | Only one thing to add and its because I've messed it up a few times. Only creatures with perfect maneuverability can 5-foot step up. All other flyers fly up at half speed (so 10 feet of movement to go up 5 feet). |
| RavenDrake02-09-07, 05:59 PM | Only one thing to add and its because I've messed it up a few times. Only creatures with perfect maneuverability can 5-foot step up. All other flyers fly up at half speed (so 10 feet of movement to go up 5 feet). Good catch, Despana, I hadn't noticed that. So, yeah, you can't make a 5ft step "vertically" with good manuverability, my mistake. |
| Cold Napalm02-09-07, 06:20 PM | Or back for that matter with good manuverbilty as a 180 degree turn imposes a -5ft penalty. You can if you have perfect though. |
| FrostHammer02-10-07, 08:01 AM | You can fly backwards with Good. you don't actually need to turn around. |
| Nom02-10-07, 08:48 AM | You can fly backwards with Good. you don't actually need to turn around.Except that your first 5 ft. of movement is lost when you start flying backwards. Similarly, turning in place costs 5 ft. movement per 90 degrees. Thus, while a Good flying can theoretically take a 5 ft. step, in practice they can only take it forward or down. |
| FrostHammer02-10-07, 08:49 AM | Or to the side? |
