I would like to hear peoples opinions of this house rule, that replaces the official 5' step rule, in the campaign I play in.

Again I am interested in critical analysis, and just plain ol' opinions.

5’-Step

The 5’-Step never grants total immunity from AoO’s.

Anytime a creature uses a 5’-Step and would normally escape an AoO if the RAW were being used, there is, instead, a 50% chance of the AoO still occurring.

A 5’-Step through an opponent’s Threat Zone grants that opponent a 50% chance to take an AoO at his Target.

A 5’-Step used to retreat followed by any other Standard or Move Action also grants a 50% AoO chance for the opponent. In fact, any movement to retreat that is followed by a Standard or Move Action will grant an opponent a 50% AoO chance.

Makes AoOs occur more often
Involves rolling more dice
Destroys most of the point of a 5' step
Leads to funky interactions with existing feats (like the one that gives you a 5' step for every AoO you get)

It seems to mostly just hose people using bows/casting spells, and slow down combat.

Well, you've just locked combat into two people standing next to each other making full attacks even more. I don't it does anything you can't easily anticipate.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it. Unless you just want to, but then you already know what you want, so why ask about it?

So...you can't ever hit a huge dragon with a sword?

As is, you have to wade in 5 feet at a time... Now even that has a 50% chance of failure for every 5' step... Keep in mind a successful AoO will stop your character from moving.

If you play with this rule, expect long-reach weapons to make a sudden resurgence.

100% false (or house rule).

Sounds unnecessarily complicated ... as if the 3.5 combat rules weren't already unnecessarily complicated!

Thanks for all of your replies.

I definately agree with the whole "if it aint broke why fix it" concept. I also agree that it makes play unduly complicated.

I suspect this house rule was placed due to an incomplete understanding of AoO's, movement, and perhaps some fear of abuse...but this is just theory.

I will point the DM in the direction of this thread, and let him see other peoples opinions.

100% false (or house rule).

While you are correct that there is no general rule, there are feats that do what he thought was the general rule.

So if you put in that ridiculous rule of 50% no 5ft step, then every large creature with reach will take that feat, so actually he is not that far off.

It's Stand Still. It's a general feat listed in the Expanded Psionics Handbook.

No sir, I don't like it.

What now?

That's nice.

What now?

With the crazy house rule above and the feat...

Attacks of Opportunity give 5' steps.
5' steps generate Attacks of Opportunity.

Two combatants with that feat could wind up 5' stepping all the way around the battlefield (until one ran out of AoOs).

I was wondering what the feat was, what book it's in, etc.

Evasive Reflexes, Tome of Battle.
