| Xabre01-13-06, 03:21 PM | I need some advice on what to spend my hard earned cash on. My Gm is going to be running a campaign, starting at 5th level. I decided to play a Paladin (alternate version from WoW... no Mount, but additional smiting power and such). The way the campaign is going, our 9k worth of starting gold is actually supplies... in other words, money won't carry over, and if we DO spend all 9k, then we end up still getting like 200 for 'travel expenses'. So I just have to decide what I want to buy for the character. Current Thoughts: Mithril Heavy Shield (1,020) Mithril Breastplate (4,200) Sword (I haven't chosen yet if this will be a longsword or bastardsword... depends on if I have the feat available for EWP). So far, that's 5220 plus the cost of (if nothing else) a masterwork sword, so we're at 5600 (I'm rounding). This leaves me with 3300 gp. Other basic options I could afford... +1 sword +1 shield +1 armor (any 2 of the above I can afford). But I can't really decide what other items might be worth while... |
| Elessara01-13-06, 04:00 PM | You could go for addtional pluses on weapons/armor or you could go for other items for body slots or utility items. Personally, I like going for utility items. For example: Ring of Sustenance Boots of Striding & Springing Ring of Feather Fall Heward's Handy Haversack Murlynd's (sp?) Spoon Rope of Climbing Bag of Holding Potions Those are just off the top of my head, I don't have my books in front of me. There's a bunch of fun utility from non-core books too. When do paladins get mounts (I forget, I rarely play them)? You could get items for your mount as well. Ele~ |

I like my armor mithral (for the lite use) and my weapons admantine (for damage reduction). I'd recommend starting with an awesome defense. A mithril breast plate (+5 AC, +5 Max Dex, -1 Armor Check) would cost you only 4,200 (4,800 gold left). The cost includes the price of master working the armor. Encumbers you a fifteen pounds. Note: Master Work stats were not included in the armor stats above because I am not sure if they are already included in the mithril description in the Dungeon Masters Guide. For a sheild, I'd go one of two routes. The first, a darkwood buckler (+1 AC, -Max Dex, -Armor Check). Low cost of 210 gold. Weighs a two and a half pounds. The advantage is being able to fire a bow while weilding it. Actually, a regular master work buckler would function with the same stats, at double the weight, for fifty gold less. Another option is the heavy mithril sheild (+2, -Max Dex, -Armor Check). Damages your purse 1,020 gold and weighs seven and a half pounds. Assuming you any combination of the above, you have either $4,590 (buckler) or $3,780 (sheild) for arms. It doesn't really matter, as an admantine weapon costs +3,000 plus the base price of the item. So if you wanted admantine, you could have it. I myself would take the Proficiency to use a Bastard sword in one hand. I also suggest a long bow matched with a set of cold iron and/or silver tipped arrows. Whatever you have left simply blow on healing potions, trail rations, and torches. P.S. - As a Paladin, you may want to look into a nice lance and maybe a military saddle for your mount. |
| _sl0t_01-13-06, 07:07 PM | I would go with a Darkwood buckler, a Greatsword masterwork and a Cloak of Charisma +2 . The sword will give you a good damage without wasting a feat and with the buckler it can be used with both hands to increase the damage from the str modifier and double your power attack damage (is there something like a basher without power attack?). The cloak may sound stupid, but think about the extra benefits paladins earn from greater charisma. You'll heal more, have better saves, increase the bonus on your smite attacks and get better modifiers on important skills for a paladin, like diplomacy. It costs 4k gp. |
