Well, I gave my rogue a magic dagger a few sessions ago. Its an intelligent dagger named Sally. She appeared as a tatoo on the rogues palm after he tryed to put her down the first time. Now he has to call her name to get her to materialize.

She is very enthusiastic about gettin into fights. Her only hang up is that she is afraid of being thrown, which is the rogues forte. And he hears about it every battle ;)

He hasn't hit a critical yet but I want to give Sally a special ability or awaken a power on a crit. I want it to be fun and add depth to the game without it being overpowering.

Any suggestions on a special power I could imbue Sally with? What are your experiances?

Thanks much,

well she injoys a good fight, maybe on a crit she would do x3 dmg instead of x2 or maybe a crit with her would allow sneak attack dmg

I think it would be cool if the power you "unlocked" would be linked to her persona. You mention that she has a fear of being thrown...why not let her have a power that overcomes that fear...such as "returning"? Or maybe a power that made him want to hang on to her, like it only functioned when he was grasping the hilt, and would lose it if she was thrown. Or for a really nasty turn on the whole fear of bweing thrown thing maybe she becomes a "backbiter" on a critical fumble, like it flies right back at him screaming "I told you not to Throw me....SORRY" *crack-shlork*

Good luck with it...sounds cool :D

LOL, that back biter is defenatly gonna be there, thats great. Maybe on a crit he can get backstab damage on the enemy even if he's not flanking...

*one other thing, Sally returns to a tatoo after she is released after 3 seconds, enough time for a ranged attack. Basically the rogue has to yell "Sally!" every round if he is working ranged. orcs and demons dont like being called Sally

I would be inclined to combine a couple of the above ideas...

If he crits while stabbing he awakens a power such as increased multiplier, or maybe add an extra d6 of sneak damage. This only applies to crits made when he stabs with the dagger.

If he ignores her cries of "Don't throw me" and scores a crit, he again awakens the same power (so it now applies to any crit he scores with the dagger). The downside to this, taking from the backbiter suggestion, is that each time he throws the dagger (both before and after the crit power has been awakened) there is a cumulative 1% chance that Sally's hatred of being thrown, and her lust for battle, causes her to undergo a radical alignment shift (CE?) and try to dominate the rogue. The cumulative chance resets to start at 1% each time he crits on a throw.

Just don't tell your player about it

Kool suggestion, I'll probably use that too.

The rogue is CN and the rest of the party is CG. So he's gettin himself into trouble now and then. Sally is NG (aside for her dislike of oogly bad guys) and is sort of like his consience. But she really does hate being thrown.

I will post a write up on Sally soon.

What ya think?

Sally
Dagger +2
Ego 12
Int 14
Wis 10
Cha 14
Powers: Telepathy/Speech, Starlight* 3/day, Backbiter (+ Sneak Attack) on critical miss, Critical Hit +1d6 +Sneak Attack damage (+ crit damage)

Sally is magical dagger that when released turns into a tatoo of a dagger on the palm of the hand, a ranged attack is possible though. She is NG and dislikes anything mean or ugly. Sally has a fear if being thrown. Every throw there is a 1% cumulative chance that on the next critical hit Sally trys to dominate the wielder. If dominated Sally will force the wielder into melee range. Sally is good at heart and gives her oppinion on any action opposing her alignment. Sally is normaly communicates telepathically with the wielder. Although on a critical hit Sally cannot hold back her emotions (fear/ranged, excitement/melee) and produces an audible sound that everyone can hear.

*Starlight is a feint white light that radiates a 10' glow.

My rogue didnt feel to good after the critical fumble last night ;)

Thanks much
