??? on rods [Archive] - Wizards Community

12-26-04, 06:11 PM In the dmg it says a wielder can use a rod 3 times per day.

It does not say the rod has 3 charges per day though. Does it mean any person wielding the rod on a given day will be able to get 3 uses from it or is it just bad wording in the dmg and it has but 3 uses per day.

In our campaign we have 3 casters in our party and all 3 use a rod of quicken 3 times per day(same rod) is this its proper use or should the rod only be able to be used 3 times per day total.

12-26-04, 06:24 PM Looks as though I should re-read my DMG. I did not know of this ruling. I have always played it as a wand or a rod can be used to the PC's hearts content as long as there were charges left. Thats probably how I will still play it...gotta re-read though.

Your thinking of wands, metamagic rods can only be used 3 times per day, not 3 times per person, just 3 times a day, they have a 24 hour charge time after the last time it was used.

As for the wording: It does appear to be an interesting bit of semantics. It appears that - reading the item's description literally - the party cleric can use it 3 times, then pass it to the wizard. The wizard uses it three times, then passes it to the druid. The druid uses it three times and gives it back to the cleric. The cleric - being the start of the chain - must wait until the next "day" to reuse the rod.

I suspect the intent was that the rod has 3 "charges" per day. However, Vincedto is correct - that's not what the item says.

12-26-04, 11:52 PM Metamagic, Empower: The wielder can cast up to three spells per day that are empowered as though using the Empower Spell feat. The text refers only to "the weilder." I would argue that "the weilder" is a continuous noun, thus allowing only three uses per day total (unless you can find a way to use it without weilding it... maybe a very difficult UMD check?).

Cleric uses rod once. The wielder has now used the rod once. Passes to the Wizard, who uses it once. The wielder has now used the rod twice.

Example: If you and I both have Maximize Rods, you use your Maximize Rod 1/day, then die, I can use my own Maximize Rod 3 times per day, and then take your rod off of your dead body and use it 2 more times that day.

12-27-04, 06:01 PM This seems to be the appropriate interpretion, otherwise the infamous line of people (in this case 29) used to move something in 6 seconds could launch 87 scorching rays at the same target in one round, and continue doing it for three rounds. That's 1044d6 fire damage. A tad powerful.
