One of the characters in my campaign is going to be a drow wizard and he's going to be unique to say the least. The drow will be a smoker, and not necessarily the of the tabacco variety. I'm not endorsing drug use and certainly not saying there is anything to gain from its use.

But since wizards are magical and clever I was thinking of designing some special pipe-weed for him. It would make his character more entertaining in combat and better to roleplay in my opinion, since the character could take the time to light his pipe and smoke a bit before or after a battle.

The simplest way of doing this would be letting the pipe-weed act as a potion, but what other rules do you guys suggest?

have the pipe be magic where once a day or something it can create a smoke illusion coupled with booming voice. this would let you scare opponents with a giant smoke creater talking in a booming voice. on the smoking material have it so the stuff has to be soaked in the potion till the potion evaporates in 2 days allowing the magic components to stay behind.

Hmmm...how about have it be something like a magical surge pipeweed? As in sort of (well vaguely like at least) like a magical version of the barbarian's rage?

I'm thinking -1d6 wisdom and -1d6 dexterity while high, but +2 to all spell DCs. The +2 to DCs lasts for 2d6 rounds, and the negitives last for 1 hour. There could be a fortitude save required to reduce the -1d6 to a -1d3.

try spinach!;)

i like what the post above came up with but my idea works well also and it might not be to far off to use both.

Any other thoughts? I realize my first post may have been a little confusing, so if you want clarifications, ask.

So, like, you're looking for a pot-ion?

Not really, I was just curious what other effects besides potions one might instill in pot/tabacco.

My original idea was simply "Wizard's weed". It gives a +2 to int for a short duration. Then I realized it could be expanded to encompass potions...

you could have it provide no bonus, but just look awesome. The scene from the hobbit where gandalf is shooting down thorin's smokerings comes to mind, as well as the one in the LOTR movie with the sailing ship.

Well, the thing is, if you make it do something awesome, or powerful, or even moderate your gonna have to explain why this is absolutely unique, and why every body and his dog isn't doing the same thing. +2 int is huge for an unclassed thing. If you did this and made it wizards weed, suddenly the drug economy is booming and every warmage/wizard/swashbuckler is hooked (which could actually lead to a interesting if strange campaign) In the ebberron books theres the dragonblood drugs that are useful to casters but have drawbacks, addiction ratings and overdose rules. Use a variation of those.

Good point Patato Weasel, he's a drow, so it could be a foreign thing.

Its most definatly magical though.

Yeah. It depends on weather your going for the Gandalf thing or the Warlock Junky thing. I personally would want to play a warlock junky, but then again I won't play anything unless they're an antihero of some sort.
