I was thinking...

Let's say we have 2 human fighters, both with the same equipment... let's say a +4 battleaxe and a suit of chainmail. Fighter A is like this:

Female Human Fighter 20. Abilities: 10 Strength, 10 Dexterity, 18 Constitution, 10 Intelligence, 10 Wisdom, 10 Charisma.

Meanwhile, Fighter B is like this:
Female Human Fighter 1. Abilities: 50 Strength, 10 Dexterity, 18 Constitution, 10 Intelligence, 10 Wisdom, 10 Charisma.

If both get the maximum roll and didn't miss, would the damage differ or stay the same?

um, the chick with the 50 str deals an extra 30 dmg(battleaxe swung with both hands)-
as long as the lvl 20 doesnt have dmg amping feats-
do you have the PHB?

I think that's the point he's trying to make...using what feats you may, will a 10 str fighter 20 match or beat the damage a 50 str fighter 1 can do?

I'm workin on it.

All things being equal (not including magical gear):

Fighter one can deal (one attack a round):

1d8 + 36 (20 str + 10 2hw + 4 axe + 2 power attack) x3 (natural 20 maximum roll) = 111 - 132 damage.

Fighter two can deal (five attacks a round):

1d8 + 8 (4 axe + 4 weapon specializations) x 3 (natural 20 maximum roll) x 5 (attacks a round...all 20s) = 135 - 240.

They differ. If you allowed magical gear, you could let the 10 str fighter use the power attack feat and it'd get really ugly.

edit: a note...I tried to keep it core.

For a REAL answer, post this question on the Character Optimisation boards.

No, they're wielding their weapons one-handed.

TheMagister: I wasn't saying that either had any feats. I'm just taking such from a standpoint of hit dice & strength bonus.

I'm not really sure what the OP is getting at here. Sure, if the level 20 fighter used no feats she won't deal very much damage per swing - 1D8+4 - for a maximum of 12, but she'll have 5 swings for a total maximum of 60. The level 1 fighter will have 1 swing for 1D8 +24, for a total maximum of 32. That's pretty simple math, what's the real question?

I am confused myself...

I look at it like this first swing both hit. second swing lvl 1 fighter dies.

Yeah, that's part of it. I just want to see what would cause more damage. Not who would die, what feats they use, etc. Just damage potential.

mad mage... no offence, but you're not making much sense. even a cursory glance at the fighter class shows that thier strength comes from feats. a level 20 fighter would have feats out the friggin wazoo, ALL potentially adding to damage capability. thats the point.

the level 1 fighter would dish out extremely high amounts of damage per hit comparitively, but the level 20 fighter would probably win in most damage per round, due to # of attacks combined with damage altering feats.

if you're asking who does more damage per hit, its the one with the 50 strength.

if you're asking who does more damage overall, its the lvl 20 fighter.

if you're asking something else entirely, you're not making yourself clear enough.

Not much (if any) really taken. I've had a number of people get confused before. And wait until I make an actual riddle. ;)

if you're asking who does more damage per hit, its the one with the 50 strength.

That's what I was looking to find out.

Edit: Allow me to note, though, that while I am rather experienced with the core rules and all, but I don't technically play P&P or what-not. It was D&D/Forgotten Realm computer games that inspired me to get and read all the rulebooks I have. I can be very curious.

That, and very interested in stats for characters or creatures.

thank you for not being offended when no offence was meant. thats a rare quality on these boards.

but if your two were to go against each other, your higher level one would win, if nothing from hit points. the lower level one, thoug dishing out lots of damage, would be eaten alive by the 15+ damage of each hit the higher level one dealt.

and forgive me if anything dosent make sense... its the 4th of july (American Independance Day... big holiday!) and ive been partying...

It really takes something nasty (intentionally insulting, IOW) to get under my skin.

Yeah, I would think as much.

I've heard worse from all walks of life, partiers or not. ;)

I'm still trying to figure out "5 attacks per round".

BAB@20th is +20/+15/+10/+5

?
