After an off hand comment in another thread about poisons and alchemy got me to thinking...

Instead of ability damage, what about a poison applying certain conditions (http://www.systemreferencedocuments.org/35/sovelior_sage/abilitiesAndConditions.html) to a character?

Fatigued->Exhausted->Staggered->Unconscious
or
(maybe Dazzled->)Dazed->Stunned->Paralyzed

Fortitude save to negate. DC 12 + number of failed saves. A successful save resets the save DC.
Each condition overlaps the last and once the condition expires, it is reduced to the less extreme condition.

For example, a rogue is hit by such a poison... he has to make a fortitude save DC 12 or be fatigued. Fatigue lasts until one gets 8 hours of rest (you might consider making this last only 4 hours instead...).

If he gets hit again, he would have to make a fortitude save DC 13 or become Exhausted. If he fails, the target is exhausted for the normal amount of time (1 hour). If he passes, and is hit again, the save DC has reset to 12. If he fails this time, he is exhausted as explained before. Once the exhaustion wears off, the character is fatigued.

If the character fails his third save against the weapon he is staggered... and so on.

Since Staggered and Unconscious is based of non-lethal damage, and in this case the targets haven't necessarily taken any, you could make them 1d4 minutes and 1d4 rounds respectively.

Worst case senario, if a character fails all his saves in a row, the DC would be Fatigued (DC 12), Exhaustion (DC 13), Staggered (DC 14), Unconscious (DC 15). He would be unconscious for 1d4 rounds then staggered for 1d4 minutes then exhausted for 1 hour and then fatigued for 8 hours.

Is this idea feasible?

Part of such a thing exists, without the 'stackableness' you implied with the arrows.

Core examples:

Oil of taggit and Drow poison.

True.

But I don't see other status effects represented, but this idea, I suppose, is overly complicated... multiple fortitude saves at changing DCs... I'll go look in the d**gs in the Book of Vile Darkness and some of the non-poison poisons in the Book of Exalted Cheese and see if I can come up with something else...

Thank you, Tarkin.

I included some water that was mildly poisonous in one of my adventures, if a character drank it it had save DC of 11, and poison damage of 1 dex/character is nausiated for 1d4 hours.
