| FrostWolf12-02-07, 04:04 PM | I have a few questions in regards to this weapon and was hoping someone could answer me. 1-If I skirmish or sneak attack with one and hit, will the target take the skirmish damage again when he pulls it out? 2-They are ten pounds each. What could I make them out of to lower this? 3-In MMv, the kao-tao can wrap the rope around a sticky shield, then slam it into the ground to lock it in place. Can this also be done with a tangle foot bag or a spiked shield by a non kao tao? 4- Is their any way to up the DC's of the harpoons abilities? 5- Is the most current version in Frostburn, and is it much different that the one in the Arms and Equipment guide? Thank you in advanced. |

I think the damage is equal when they pull it out. 2-They are ten pounds each. What could I make them out of to lower this? Well, in theory the weapon itself is made of wood and steel. Usind darkwood and mithril might lower the weight of the harpoon itself. You still have the rope to consider too though. I'm sure you could talk to your DM about using the above materials and silk rope to get it down to five pounds. Also (this might not be an option), you could play a small race. Your weapons weigh half as much, but your carrying capacity is 3/4 that of a medium creature, effectively letting you carry half again more in terms of weapons and armor. 3-In MMv, the kao-tao can wrap the rope around a sticky shield, then slam it into the ground to lock it in place. Can this also be done with a tangle foot bag or a spiked shield by a non kao tao? I'm not sure. In theory, you would just need access to whatever it is that they use (unless it's some wierd racial feature). 4- Is their any way to up the DC's of the harpoons abilities? Do more damage. My understanding is the Reflex DC is based on the damage you deal. So more damage means a higher DC. 5- Is the most current version in Frostburn, and is it much different that the one in the Arms and Equipment guide? I think Frostburn is the most recent. The A&EG and Sword & Fist versions are both 3.0. Now, I think they're about the same, but the weapon size mechanics might work a bit differently. So, for simplicity, I'd say go with Frostburn. |

| ragentx12-04-07, 06:03 PM | 4- Is their any way to up the DC's of the harpoons abilities? Well if you were playing a large size character (say 1/2 Ogre) you could go the 3 lv PRC Hulking Hurler. You get two throw tricks in 3 lvs. You can take Meterior strike (2x's str dmg on a throw) making the DC to get it out very hard and as another throw trick...either Knockdown ( they go prone no S.T.) or Overburden heave... throw a harpoon up two two sizes bigger then you or up to your medium weight load. Then find a chart that gives dmgs amounts by weight for objects or use a Gig. Harpoon.... fun huh? |
| ragentx12-04-07, 06:06 PM | You could get Burrowing put on you Harpoon... if you DM allows it... its a bonus from complete warrior... the weapon burrows into the creature and they take the weapon dmg (no str or other bonuses) when they remove it... should stack with harpoon dmg upon removal. Get explosive on your harpoon... explodes when its...does dmg to adjoining 5ft squares. |
