| Crimson_Concerto07-03-06, 04:14 PM | But no, I don't think this one is completely game-breaking. I was wondering about a magic item of "Gravestrike". I can't seem to decide how much such an item is worth. It's only a first level spell, but so is True-Strike. I don't want it to be a permanent effect, though. I think 5/day should be about right. What do you think? |
| Silverthumb12807-03-06, 04:47 PM | A 1st level spell is still a 1st level spell. :D Good as it may be, the pricing really shouldn't change. |
| RavenDrake07-03-06, 07:28 PM | Unlike the potentially far more abuseable True Strike or Wraithstrike item, Gravestrike is a much simpler to adjucate spell. It profers a limited, but very useful, ability. I'm still leary of using the Spell Level x Caster Level format for the item, however, simply because the effect it grants is pretty powerful, so I'd probably wind up putting a premium on the effect... In my campaigns, I've set the minimum values for items using the Spell level times caster level formula to be Spell level 2 and Caster level 3, regardless of the spell or caster level used in the item. This does not change the market price of established items which use the formula, they're simply considered to be so well known in manufacture as to bypass this stricture... |
| Zillah07-03-06, 08:49 PM | not broken. again, DM discretion. but if you are always fighting undead then do it. it IS a swift action, and that IS your only swift action allowed for the round. that is huge. |
| Vaelan07-03-06, 09:32 PM | it IS a swift action, and that IS your only swift action allowed for the round. that is huge. No, it isn't. There are so few non-spellcasting options that use Swift actions that it is largely irrelevant to anyone who would use this item. |
| Zillah07-03-06, 09:43 PM | the point of a swift/immidiate action is to give that little help thats needed. there are plenty of swift actions around for nonspell casters to pick and choose what to activate. it is a big deal |
| thenotoriousJIM07-12-06, 09:08 PM | I like the idea of a minmum caster level. but the game already has one. It is th minimum level in order to get the feat to make the item. A wonderous item has a minimum level of 3. Very simple yet often overlooked |
| tarkin07-13-06, 10:51 AM | You are confusing minimum caster level and minimum level to take a feat. You are allowed to create a Wonderous Item with a caster level of less than 3. For proof look up rings. To take the Forge Ring feat, you need to be caster level 12. Look at the CL for the very first ring - Animal Friendship. It has caster level 3. The next ring is Blinking - caster level 7. ---------------- Someone said a first level spell is still a first level spell. That is true - and COMPLETELY irrelevant. Magic items are based on their STRENGTH. You are only supposed to use the level of the spell as a guide if you have NO other way to determine the power of the magic item. That is why an item of Mage Armor is priced as a +4 armor, not a first level spell. Gravestrike is a simple spell - it lets you sneak attack undead. One of the balancing issue is that clerics and Paladins are unlikely to be have the Sneak attack power. Another is the short duration, which is compensated for by it's swift action. The question is, how powerfull is that ability? Assume best case scenario, that is +10d6 of damage. It only works in special circumstances, only works on rare creatures, and requires much on the part of the user. The most I could see paying for it would be 20,000 gp for at will. For upto 5/day, 10,000 gp For a continuous item, the pricing would be 2000*1*1 But the duration is in rounds, so it should be x4. But wait, the duration is not just 'in rounds', it is exactly ONE round. To me, that says double it. 2,000*1*1 *8 = 16,000 gp. Considering I thought 20k was the most I would pay, it seems reasonable to me to make 16,000 for a continous item. I think making it x5 a day should be 1/2 that price. That would ignore the fact that there is normally no 'duration' adjustment for x/day items, but I think it is a fair price. 8,000 for a x5/day. |

I think 8k is too cheap for this. Your average 6th level (8k) shouldn't have this item. I like it better when it scales with the player weapon cost. I like thinking of it like this: This is basically a weapon version of Fortification (in reverse). Fortification, Heavy (DMG p219) 100% chance of negating a critical hit or sneak attack. Strong Abj CL13 Craft Arms & Armor Limited Wish –or– Miracle +5 ability weapon property of Gravestriking 100% change of preventing undead the ability to negate sneak attacks. Strong Abj CL13 Craft Arms & Armor Limited Wish –or– Miracle +4 ability (because it only effects undead and sneak attack) So +1 Dagger of Permanent Grave Strike costs: 302 gp 50,000 gp (+5 weapon bonus) ------ 50,302 gp Much of the power comes from the spell is limited to certain classes and is personal. I don't feel good about handing personal spells (in item form) to classes that is clearly benefits more than the class that got the spell on their spell list. |
