| arjomanes07-06-06, 06:34 PM | Is there a halberd with 10' reach? I hate trying to pronounce guisarme. "I swing my GWEE-ahm at the orc's feet, to trip it." "Your what?" "my uh Gwee-ahm. My uh glaive with a hook on it." "oh, you mean your JIZ-arm" "well er. . .no" |
| CryoSilver07-06-06, 06:41 PM | Just call it something else :P |
| mvincent07-06-06, 06:42 PM | Is there a halberd with 10' reach? I hate trying to pronounce guisarme. Use the guisarme stats and just call it a halberd. |
| OravennasBrother07-06-06, 07:08 PM | Use the guisarme stats and just call it a halberd. Or Call it a Hooked glaive |
| mvincent07-06-06, 07:18 PM | "Polearm" |
| Grunj07-06-06, 08:28 PM | There's an exotic weapon called the Heavy Poleaxe. It's a halberd that does 2d6 and is a reach weapon. |
| Thurbane07-07-06, 05:52 AM | I often wondered why the halberd didn't have reach: but then again, I always wondered why the longspear wasn't called a pike... Just for the record, I always pronounce guisarme as gwyze-arm...no idea if that's correct or not. |
| Dwarven_Jihad07-07-06, 01:27 PM | giz-ARM. Emphasis on the second syllable. |
| arjomanes07-07-06, 02:07 PM | There's an exotic weapon called the Heavy Poleaxe. It's a halberd that does 2d6 and is a reach weapon. Thanks! Do you know what book that's in? |
| OravennasBrother07-07-06, 02:54 PM | giz-ARM. Emphasis on the second syllable. sounds like "Geese Arm" the weapon of the terrifying Geesetapo. |
| Dwarven_Jihad07-07-06, 03:46 PM | "giz" actually is pronounced like "wiz" or "his", not as "geez" :) (Would the Geesetapo ride ferocious Dire Geese into battle? That's got possibilities for a less-than-totally serious encounter...) |
| sir_andrew_the_victorious07-07-06, 05:50 PM | There are halberd type weapons with reach. Ive seen them up to 18 long! However my understanding for what D&D is going for with the weapon presented in the PHB is what some people would call a poleaxe. This weapon is generally a little taller than the wielder, although it could also be shorter than the wielder depending on personal tastes. I know a 62 re-enactor who prefers to use a 58 poleaxe. I also know a re-enactor who acts as a member of the Royal Guard who uses a long halberd about 12 long. Hes only 56 tall. The longer halberd type weapons tend to have much smaller axe heads than the poleaxe versions. I would recommend lowering the damage die for a halberd with reach down to a 1d8 with a 10 reach and a 1d6 for one with 20 reach. Crit stats remain the same. I would also suggest that any halberd that is given reach should be treated as an exotic weapon do to the rarity of the weapon. |
| Tony Vargas07-07-06, 06:12 PM | Dropping a halberd to d8 and giving it reach gives you a reasonably balanced martial weapon, (compare Glaive to Greataxe). If your DM doesn't mind home-brew, but balanced, weapons, that should be fine. |
| Grunj07-08-06, 09:13 AM | The Heavy Poleaxe can be found in The Complete Warrior. |
| Kapalen07-08-06, 04:17 PM | Halberd is actually a vague term to refer to any big chunk of metal you can kill someone with. So, calling your guisarme or polearm a halberd is no stretch. |
| Tsank07-08-06, 05:10 PM | The Dwarven Warpike in Races of Stone is more akin to the Halberd than the Heavy Poleaxe. It can do the same thing the halberd can but does 2d6 damage and is a reach weapon. |
