I need to set a 'Mystic Helm of the Ancients' type of treasure I placed years ago in a 2nd Edition Campaign.

The item was hidden inside an altar in a very heavily trapped shrine, which was also protected by an elder air elemental. Shrine was located in a extremely ancient fortress deep into an arctic continent inhabited by barbarians.

Which item would fit the bill? Put your Helm suggestion here :)!

Are you just looking for a random helm that would seem like a logical "Ancient and Eldritch Helm of Oldness you probably found in a shrine somewhere" kind of item...

Cause I'd say "Helm of Brilliance" or "Helm of Teleportation"... alternately, if you want, You could substitute cold and darkness effects for the Helm of Brilliance...

From the sound of the whole "buried under antarctica" concept, anything with cold would work. Mabey allows the wearer to cast certian cold spells x times der day, gives them a large resistance to cold magic, or even makes them a cold element creature (manual of the planes). It kind of depends on the power level. Alternatively, it could have absolutly nothing to do with cold, and just be great for barbarians and melee masters.

I am looking for something that would fit the bill of Ancient and Eldritch Helm of Oldness, but I am not too sure about the Helm of Brilliance or the Helm of Teleportation, hence the posting. Any made helms with combat or psionic bonuses?

Make up a helm, that would probably work much better then just picking a premade helm.

Well you gotta ask yourself 2 questions here:

1) Why was this helm put in such a remote inaccessable location and guarded with traps and things? Power too great for mortal-kind? Pure-icky-evil that will consume the world if ever used?

2) why an AIR elemental? Why not fire? why not a [insert anything but Air Elemental here]? Is this a helm feared by air elementals so they guard it? Or is it treasured by them so they defend it?

depending on the answer to these questions, you might come to a sugestion for this item, like a Helm of Commanding Air Elementals that only works for Evil characters (bestoys massive negative levels on Good/Neutral wearers).

The module where it sprouted from was a D&D conversion of the classic fantasy-rpg book 'Caverns of Kalte', by John Dever, from the Lone Wolf Series.

The temple it was hidden in was guarded by a 'swirling hurricane of pure cold', hence the Elemental.

The temple itself was one of the 'Ancients', elder beings which also built the massive underground fortress of Ice the PC's where assaulting at the time.

So, suggestions?

Maybe a psionic protecting item? (I don't really use psionics in my campaign)? A combat enhancer? A charisma enhancer? An item that bestows regal aposture in battle like a scepter of command but in helm?

Thanks for the help so far.
