Well, I was thinking about an assassin I wanted to try out, and realized I wanted to give them a suprise edge, even if they'd already started combat. To that end, I came up with this little device, and a bad name for it. Ah well, trying to keep the name short.

Spring Spike

A Spring Spike is designed mostly for suprise rather than traditional combat.

Desc: a Spring Spike is a 6 inch spike concealed in a wooden tube of the same size. Attached to a spring inside, the spike is held in place by a lock on the front, from which runs a string. a simple twich of the string releases the lock, allowing the spike to burst forth.

Equipping: The Spring Spike is not used as a weapon in the traditional sense, rather, it is concealed on the body, usually along the arms or the legs with the string that runs off of it sercured to some other part of the body, often a finger or toe.

Useage: As a free action, the player may deploy the Spike Spring as an attack as normal, except for the following:

If the opponent is unaware of the weapon, they lose their dex bonus to AC, even if neither flat footed or flanked.

Stats:

Damage 1d6(while the spike itself is small, the sheer force of the spring that propels makes it suprisinly damaging), Light weapon
Weight: 1 pound

Unwieldly: While the Spring Spike is an effective suprise weapon, it functions poorly as a traditional weapon. Attempting to use the weapon after it has been deployed confers a -2 to attack rolls and causes the weapon to do 1d4 damage rather than 1d6. In addition, the spike is akward while fighting, causing a -1 to all attack rolls. The weapon may be unattached from the body as a standard action.

Concealable - Specifically designed to be hidden, the Spike Spring gives the user a +5 bonus to Sleight of Hand checks made to conceal it on the body.

Grappling - Because of it's unique design, the Spike Spring makes an excellent grapple weapon. When the player is in a grapple, he use a standard action to deploy the Spike Spring, doing so does not require a grapple check. The player may even preform this action when held.

Check: An opponent makes a spot check as normal to attempt to notice the weapon.

It's a bit long, right now I'm trying to figure out what to tone down and take out. Comments?
