A horse on the battlements? [Archive] - Wizards Community

For my next game the PCs are planning to try and break into a castle. Likely they'll climb the walls, or somehow get onto the battlements. Up there I want them to encounter one of the castle's guardians, a Binder/KotSS with Andras as his vestige.

Andras grants this lovely ability to summon a heavy mount. So I had this great image of the knight they're fighting suddenly summoning a horse and then charging down the battlements at the PCs (who then either have to leap off the wall to get away, or get trampled).

The question is, could a heavy mount (size Large creature) be able to charge down a 5' wide battlement? Would I need to apply squeezing rules? Any other thoughts on the encounter/tactic?

You would have to apply the squeezing rules and by doing so this hinders the horse's movement preventing it from charging.

It could still do an Overrun action though, right? I don't need it to be a Charge action as much as a "run up to/over them" action

You could always have a 10 ft wide battlement.

Yes, you can.

I'd use the squeezing rules, but I'd also add a balance check for the mount. I'd probably set the DC at 10.

Or you could just rule 0 it. If anyone calls you on it just say the mount has some special training or something to let it work.

Borrow the 3.0 large for this purpose and just make the horse Large (Long).

As for the tactic, it was one used in the Crusades if I remember right, they even had the stairways and other things positioned so as to make it easy for the riders to use

I recall reading somewhere that horses can't go down normal stairs (but they can go up). But maybe with very gradual stairs...

It's not so much that they can't, but rather that they're naturaly afraid of going down steep slopes. A horse trained to follow it's master into battle should be able to overcome that fear.
