I am new to D&D 3.5 (or any WotC D&D). My players have brought up a notion of Keen weapons. Now I seem to recall Keen weapons from Neverwinter Nights, so I am assuming they came about in 3rd ed...I ask of you, Are there keen weapons in 3.5 ed? If so, where are they mentioned?

As usual, your help is much appreciated

In the DMG, under magical weapons.

A Keen weapon must be Slashing or Piercing in nature. It has double the threat range of a normal weapon.

For example, a longsword has a threat range of 19-20. A +1 Keen longsword has a threat range of 17-20.

So its in the DMs Guide? I could have sworn I combed that thing page by page. Thanks for the help, my cut-happy players will be most excited!

Remember! In 3.5 a keen weapon does NOT stack with the effects of Improved Critical.

Thank you please drive through.

There is also a property that duplicates Keen for bludgeoning weapons called Impact.

Right after you posted this my player sent me this message in an email

"Longbow [Crit Range: 20]
of Keenness [Crit Range: 19-20]
Quiver of Keenness [Crit Range: 18-20]
Archery Bracers of Keenness [Crit Range: 17-20]
Potion of Keenness [Crit Range: 16-20]
Feat, Improved Citical [Crit Range: 15-20]

I know, it both FRIGHTENS and AROUSES."

So thank you for your preemptive knowledge allowing me to shush this little idea at least a little bit!:)

Even if they all stacked, he's calculating all the Keenings wrong.

Remind him that enchantment bonuses of the same type never stack (other than dodge to AC... but that's beside the point), even if they're from separate sources.

Yeah, but they're not ehancement bonuses to the weapon's threat range. They're not even named bonuses of any sort. o.o

Keen: This ability doubles the threat range of a weapon. Only piercing or slashing weapons can be keen. (If you roll this property randomly for an inappropriate weapon, reroll.) This benefit doesn’t stack with any other effect that expands the threat range of a weapon (such as the keen edge spell or the Improved Critical feat).Moderate transmutation; CL 10th; Craft Magic Arms and Armor, keen edge; Price +1 bonus.

Stacking crit threat increases was one of the things they sought to eliminate completely in 3.5.

I'm quite aware of that and agree with the idea. However, that doesn't make your explanation of why (named bonuses not stacking) any less irrelevant / inapplicable. :P

Similarly, if we assume his potion of keenness is actually oil of keen edge, we see that keen edge (PH pg 246) also explicitly does not stack. I've no idea where the bracers or quiver may be found, but I can assure you that if they are based on keen edge then they won't stack either, or if they explicitly rule that they do will cost a lot more because of this.

Before your player gets too "aroused" by his aspirations of uberness, I suggest he actually understand the rules. Otherwise he just looks silly.

Well we pride ourselves on looking silly. After so long of trying to fight it, we just gave up and embraced our inner dork.

I don't have too much fear from my players getting too uber/munchkin/number-crunchy. We've been friends for ever, grew up on Original D&D and Warhammer 40,000 Rogue Trader and many other old pen and paper gems.

I think its just a way of joking around where his little longbow is concerned.

But you all have clarified the rules a bit. I fully understand you get one bonus for Keen....from only one item...anything else is superfilous. Just like you should only get one deflection bonus. I realize dodge bonuses seem to be a special situation.

So many rules...so many interpretations
