| Daemon_Maior02-27-08, 07:37 AM | The book Arms and Armor describes a tonlet, which is a chainmail skirt, added to an existing piece of armor. It adds some Armor value, reduces Max Dex, worsens Armor Check Penalty, and slows down. I was wondering how to make Mithral versions of this thing. The description says that, "if draped over another suit of armor, its armor bonus stacks with the bonus of the normal armor." Based on that I'd say that Mithrals bonuses are added to both the tonlet, and the piece of armor. However, it also claims the tonlet modifies the Check penalties and Max Dex of the armor it's worn over. So that would mean Mithrals bonuses can only be added once(to the modified piece of armor). This seems illogical to me, since that would mean a Mithril tonlet would be half as heavy as a normal one, but have no other advantages. Overall, I'm tended to say that the bonuses are to be added twice. But I'm afraid I'm not really objective, since it's my character that's probably going to end up wearing one. Anyways, is there something I missed? Any rules I overlooked? Or is this really just up to the DM? |

Try Elven Chain (found towards the back of the 3.5 DMG) i would think you could have it made into a skirt (as i have) or just stick with the normal Elven Chain as depicted. It is a bit pricey if you are a lover level, but not too bad. |
| sakuradm02-27-08, 09:09 AM | *sigh* Sorry about my typo above, i meant to say LOWER. |
| Daemon_Maior02-27-08, 09:32 AM | That's what the edit button is for. :P Anyways, My question was how to handle this mechanically. How to use the benefits Mithral armor gives you when a Mithral tonlet is used in combination with Armor. |
| sakuradm02-27-08, 09:49 AM | 1- there's an edit button? I didn't know that :P 2- yes i see....What kind of armour are you wanting to use this with?i would think if using this WITH a light armour, maybe it would be considered a medium armour...I'm not sure though. Otherwise, stack the AC? |
| jaelis02-27-08, 10:02 AM | Wait, are you trying to improve your overall max dex by adding a mithral skirt over it? There's no possible way that should work. At very best, the tonlet would improve your AC and leave your max dex and ACP alone. This is also a cheesy item. |
| sakuradm02-27-08, 10:09 AM | lol if just wearing the tonlet, its not so cheesey... 1- Its super stylish and cute (if you are a girl of course:P) 2- it's light 3-good AC bonus :D |
| Daemon_Maior02-27-08, 10:17 AM | The tonlet adds Armor when worn over an existing piece of armor. Normally it also reduces Max Dex, worsens Armor Check Penalty, increases Arcane Spell Faliure chance, and decreases Moving Speed. You could say it modifies the statistics of the armor it's worn over. My question was what to do mechanically with a Mithral tonlet. Of course it's not going to increase the Max Dex of the armor I'm wearing, or reduce my Armor Check Penalty, it's make no sense if it did. Based on the wording in 'Arms and Armor', I find it unclear what to do. It says the tonlets Armor Bonus stacks with the armor it's worn over, but Max Dex, ACP, ASFC are modified from the armor. |
| sakuradm02-27-08, 10:23 AM | Yes, meaning the AC goes up, and the other stuff worsens... sorry i dont ecaxtally know what you guys mean when you say "mechanically". |
| jaelis02-27-08, 10:33 AM | My question was what to do mechanically with a Mithral tonlet. Of course it's not going to increase the Max Dex of the armor I'm wearing, or reduce my Armor Check Penalty, it's make no sense if it did. I'm not sure I understand quite what you're asking, maybe you could give us the numbers you're talking about. But my own impression would be to rule that if both the armor and the tonlet were mithril, you'd apply the benefits of mithral to your overall scores. If only one of them were mithral, you'd get no benefit. Just seems the simplest answer. |
| Daemon_Maior02-27-08, 10:34 AM | By 'mechanically' I mean in terms of D&D's rules, what happens to Armor Class, Max Dex etc., you assumed that right. So, I'm asking, what if I made a Mithral tonlet? But now that I've had to explain myself so often, I found a mistake in my thoughts, and, through that, my answer. Thanks for the help. :D |
| sakuradm02-27-08, 10:37 AM | hehe.. answering an question with a question always works :D... i tried! :D but its good you figured it out ^_^ |
