Ok, I have been thinking that their has got to be a better combat system. My idea was that one can sacrifice the amount of damage one does in melee combat for a boost in armor class.

This combat method has not been tested, but I think that it will work.

When one attacks with a melee combat with a melee weapon, you can chose to do normal damage with no boost to your armor class, increase your weapons damage by one category for a -2 penalty for every category, or decrease your weapons damage by one category for a +1 bonus to your armor class for every category.
the power attack feat allows you to only take a -1 penalty for up to 2 advancements.
By using this rule, one can fight more defensively than normal, or fight more aggressively and do more damage than otherwise but at the cost of your armor class.

Well, there is a feat called Power Attack... and there also is something called Fighting Defensively.

So, like combat expertise except damage instead of AB and no feat. Could make sense, but obviously there would have to be limits on it. First, I'm assuming that by "one category" you mean "one." I would say that you would have to decide before you attack and you can only change your str bonus, and it can't go below 0 or above double it's original amount.
