| bacchuspup10-19-04, 10:15 AM | I've become addicted to Neverwinter Nights, which uses D&D rules, and I'm confused about how critical hits are calculated. If a weapon has an enhancement bonus, do you apply it before or after the multiplier on a critical hit? Same question with strength bonus. For example, say you have a 1d6 +1 weapon, and a strength bonus of 2. You get a critical hit (x2). Is the hit caluclated as (1d6 +1 +2) + (1d6 +1 +2), or is it 1d6 +1d6 +1 +2? Do you double the enhancements? And if you have an additional damage per hit (say, for example, 1d6 of acid), do you get another 1d6 roll of acid damage as well on a critical hit? Thanks so much for your help! |
| mattmurdock10-19-04, 10:21 AM | Pretty much any fixed bonus is multiplied within a critical unless the rules specifically say otherwise - so the +1 enhancement bonus and +2 Strength bonus would both count twice in your example (so 1d6+1+2 becomes 2d6+2+4). Conversely, pretty much any variable dice damage increase is not multiplied within a critical, unless the rules specifically say otherwise - so the 1d6 acid damage or a 2d6 sneak attack do not count twice, they just get added to the total (so 1d6+1+2+[1d6 acid] becomes 2d6+2+4+[1d6 acid]). Hope this covers your question, and glad you are enjoying Neverwinter Nights. |

| warok10-19-04, 10:23 AM | edit: damn someone beat me :(, well at least we agree Is the hit caluclated as (1d6 +1 +2) + (1d6 +1 +2), or is it 1d6 +1d6 +1 +2? its the first one (1d6 +1 +2) + (1d6 +1 +2) about the acid, extra damage dice are NEVER multiplied during a critical hit. this includes sneak attack dice, elemental dice, powerful charge feats(non-core), probally a lot more examples so for example you had a +1 acidic scimitar and you have 14 str (+2) and are holding it in one hand on a crit you do (1d6+2+1)+(1d6+2+1) + 1d6(acid) or 2d6+6+1d6(acid) hope that helped |
| CruelDM10-19-04, 10:29 AM | As a side note, damage increases as a result of a power attack are also doubled on a crit. I only mention this because its not covered in the examples given. |
| bacchuspup10-19-04, 10:42 AM | Okay... damage increases based on a power attack are also multiplied on a critical. Got it. And I guess damage increases based on two-handed weilding are also multiplied on a critical. As long as y'all are in a generous mood with your knowledge... what ARE the damage increases for two-handed weilding? And can a medium character (say, a human), use two hands on a medium weapon (like a longsword) to get the two-handed damage increase? I know the damage decrease on the off-hand weapon in two-weapon fighting is 1/2 your strength modifier. |
| bacchuspup10-19-04, 10:47 AM | Oh... and I think the answer is "no"... but do you get a two-handed weilding damage increase for a dual weapon, like a dire mace or a two-bladed sword? I think the answer is that a duel weapon is treated just like two separate weapons, one in your hand and one in your off-hand, but I guess I want to make sure. |
| Naeron10-19-04, 10:48 AM | When wielding a 2 handed weapon, or a one-handed weapon in two hands (but not a light weapon in 2 hands) the wielder adds 1 1/2 times strength bonus to damage (round down) and follows the +2 damage for -1 BAB power attack formula. As far as double weapons goes the answer is "sometimes". From the SRD: "A character can fight with both ends of a double weapon as if fighting with two weapons, but he or she incurs all the normal attack penalties associated with two-weapon combat, just as though the character were wielding a one-handed weapon and a light weapon. The character can also choose to use a double weapon two handed, attacking with only one end of it. A creature wielding a double weapon in one hand can’t use it as a double weapon—only one end of the weapon can be used in any given round." So you can choose do use only one end of your double weapon two handed (and gain 1 1/2 times strength etc) but no extra attacks from TWF, or you can use both ends with TWF and get 1 times strength with the primary attack and 1/2 strength with the off-hand attack. Cruel DM - You can use a light weapon in 2 hands but you do not gain any additional damage from strength bonus SRD - "Using two hands to wield a light weapon gives no advantage on damage; the Strength bonus applies as though the weapon were held in the wielder’s primary hand only." |
| CruelDM10-19-04, 10:49 AM | Wielding a weapon with 2 hands nets a 1.5 damage increase from Str. rounded down (so a Str of 15 (+2) = +3 damage). A one handed weapon can be used in 2 hands, a light weapon cannot. You are correct about the off hand damage with regards to Str.. Naeron is correct in regards to power attack, when using a 2 handed weapon in combination with power attack you gain +2 damage for each 1 point spent on the power attack. |
| Nom10-20-04, 12:24 AM | In general, just calculate your damage (rolls and all) twice (or thrice or quadth?), and add the results together. Bonus damage - sneak attack, flaming, ... - is then added on as a single factor at the end. |
| Von Helmet10-20-04, 10:38 AM | Would it not be easier to just multiply your damage rolled + modifiers X 2? 1d6 + 1 + 2 X 2 = dmg done ex. 6 + 1+ 2 x 2= 18 same as (1d6 + 1 + 2) (1d6 + 1 + 2) just less rolling. |
| Zherog10-20-04, 11:19 AM | Except a critical hit is intended to be rolled multiple times, not rolled once and multiplied. |
