using the wood shape spell can you change the shape of a wand into some type of holy symbol, or an armband or maybe a crude broach and still use it like a wand?

I don't see why not, unless there is a specific restriction (like if you warp the wand it loses its magic?). Flavor is always mutable.

You would still need a free hand to use it though, and you'd still have to point it in the general direction of the target or area.

I wonder if you could use the wood shape spell to convert say, a magical longbow into a magical club? Or maybe a huge javelin into a large quarterstaff or medium greatclub?

Flavor is always good. What you need to watch out for is having it "act" like something else though, without paying associated costs.

I think the MIC has charts on making an item type for a different slot, or combining items...something like that.
Having a "wand" amulet or armband, would have consequences to whether it can be disarmed (sundered?) and what you are carrying in your hands at that moment.

Ex: Heavy Shield and a Longwsword...just first "hands full" I thought of
Player: I move and then activate my wand of fireballs
DM: Ok, Do you drop the longsword and quickdraw the wand?
Player: No, it's actually shaped so that it's my armband.
DM: ..... did I agree that it could be activated w/o being held?

And I would say that if you could change the shape (like an armband, or a cloak pin) that it would take up that item slot but looking at the numbers to create a scroll spell level x caster level x 25 x 50, fireball (3rd) 5th level caster 18,750 for 50 scrolls not to metion the encumberance to carry all of them
vs same types 3x5x750/2 5,625 for a 50 charge wand (dm 287)
number crunching an all it doesnt seem scrolls are worth it.

that is a good point, but most spell casters don't use shields and off hand activation isnt at a minus

another thought I was pondering, waas to make a Rod and use it as the haft or pommel of a melee weapom to deliver touch spells (inflict wounds, touch of fatiuge etc) especially since rods can be used by anyone and their construction makes a nice weapon extra at a low cost

Yes, scrolls are not worth it.

Well, there is the Rod of Lordly Might which acts as a weapon. And I believe there is a weapon enhancement or something that does just that. Check the MiC, and possibly the CArcane.

Thanks I will look into that, still touching the wooden armband, or grabbing the cloak clasp to activate a wand vs the draw and point could have a little flavor. But that is why I ask questions here for others thoughts and opinions

Most straight Sorc or Wiz sure?
What about Clerics, Druids, Duskblades, Warmages, 2-wand weilder casters ( I like my magic-missile "gun-fighter" ) and a bunch of multi-class possibilities.

Again, it shouldn't be "freely" used to avoid issues with having your hands already holding items. As the next example you give is a Rod as part of a weapon handle, that tells me the character idea is more melee oriented so could easily be holding a shield, weapon or another item in the off hand

It's a good idea though.
Since that is combination of items, def check out the MIC guidelines on that.

Hey Hsien, would you allow the Front handle of the shield (ie the shields grip) to be made of leather straps and a wooden (wand) handle? Then carrying the off hand shield wouldn't be a problem and there are feats that allow you to use the shield arm while not lossing shield ARCL bonuses

according to the DMG pg 288 the cost for adding new abilities is a simple multiple of 1.5 or 50% increase in price still not to expensive to have the lighting bolt Mace for that cleric, or a Inflict wounds shield for the improved shield basher. rods as weapons only incure the masterwork weapon cost DMG 284 the more I research this the better it looks unless there is a big objection to this line of thought.

That rule is both outdated (by the MiC) and not what it's reffering to. That's about stuff like enhancement bonuses to abilities, natural armor boosts, that sort of thing.

there a wand chamber in dungeonscape that lets you put a wand on a weapon or shield and have it ready to use.

Would you allow a wand that didn't require a free hand? Goggles or bracers or something? If so, what would you charge? 1.5 the price? Double?

Casting glove, MIC, answers all your prayers. :)

Casting Glove, while all kinds of useful, is also all kinds of expensive.

I found what I wanted in Dungeonscape. Each wand bracer can hold 5 wands, allowing retrieval as a swift action, but even better, the wand chamber property allows you to store a wand in a weapon or shield and have it considered ready for activation.

As soon as he can afford it, my spiderclimbing warlock will have two gauntlets and a mithril buckler with wand chambers, giving him three wands readied with both hands free. With ten wands on tap with swift actions.
