I think a rock would deal 1 damage and have a range increment of 10ft.

I'd say that it depends on the size of the rock, but if it is about baseball sized then I'd say you could get d3 (maybe even d4) damage out of it, and the range increment should be 20'.

That's just me, though. In any case, though, it should probably be treated as an improvised weapon, thus a -4 to attack rolls.

I was thinking a rock 1/4 the size of a man's palm and making it a simple weapon.

If you have access to it, check out page 159 of the Complete Warrior for improvised weapon damage. I think that should make it pretty simple. As well, it states on page 113 of the PHB, last sentance on the page, "An improvised thrown weapon has a range increment of 10 feet".

Don't know why I didn't think of that.

well a baseball is made to be thrown so it would probably do more damage than a rock, depending on who threw it and how much the rock weighed.

thinking that a sling bullet does 1d4 and a sling pebble does 1d3, a rock might just do 1d2.

One time I busted out a light from around 70 feet away with a very tiny rock, it was amazing. I must have rolled three 20's in a row.

a house sized rock would disagree with the original statement.
