A simple question (or three) about wands [Archive] - Wizards Community

1. Who can use wands? Only characters who have spell-casting abilities?

2. Also, if a wizards has a wand of "vampiric touch," can he only use this wand if "vampiric touch" is in his spellbook?

3. Also, also... Can he use a wand of "vampiric touch" if he can only cast 2nd level spells (i.e. 4th level wizard)?

2) Correct, See #1.

3) Yes, See #1. Note, even a 1st level Ranger, who can't cast ANY spells and has "no caster level" can still use a wand if the spell is from the Ranger List - including a wand of Cure Light Wounds, the most commonly purchased wand.

06-30-05, 11:42 AM Anyone who has the specific spell in the wand on their class's spell list (not necessarily in their spellbook or known) can use a wand with that spell. Caster level doesn't matter, wizards can use wands with any wizard spell, bards with any bard spell, etc.

Anyone can also learn the Use Magical Device skill (but it is cross-class for most classes) to activate any wand, the rules are right at the UMD description.

07-01-05, 01:15 AM A 3rd or 4th level single class wizard can but should not use a wand of Vampiric Touch since it is a TOUCH range spell and wizards are squishy.

Also, anyone with "Use Magic device (i.e. Rogues) can potentially use a wand.
