A Whip question [Archive] - Wizards Community

02-02-05, 10:03 AM Greetings all. Does the Weapon Finesse feat for a whip allow one to use the user's DEX instead of their trip when it comes to tripping and disarming? I want to reccommend that my friend make a bard who maxes out his DEX, has 10 strength, and runs around with a whip (to disarm and trip humanoid opponants) and crossbow (to take care of those he can't trip or disarm).

02-02-05, 10:04 AM No. Read Weapon Finesse. It applies only to attack rolls, not ability checks.

02-02-05, 10:38 AM With Finesse, you could use Dex to make the touch attack to initiate a trip attempt, but not for the opposed strength roll; for a disarm, I can't think of any reason you couldn't use Dex - it's an opposed attack roll after all, and with Finesse you can use Dex for attack rolls...

And regardless of your feats, you need to use Str for the trip check, while your opponent can use either Str or Dex to resist it. Low-Strength characters do not make good trippers.

Whip: A whip deals nonlethal damage. It deals no damage to any creature with an armor bonus of +1 or higher or a natural armor bonus of +3 or higher. The whip is treated as a melee weapon with 15-foot reach, though you don’t threaten the area into which you can make an attack. In addition, unlike most other weapons with reach, you can use it against foes anywhere within your reach (including adjacent foes).PS. they're specifically listed as being eligible for Weapon Finess despite not being light weapons.
