+ability items and how to replace? [Archive] - Wizards Community

Hello everyone. I've been thinking recently(a very dangerous activity) and I think that I'm starting to get rather vexed by how everyone NEEDS items of +6 to, at the very least, their main stat as well as any other ones they feel they need *cough* constitution *cough*.

I was trying to think of a way to get around this, effectively removing these items from the game so that everyone doesn't need to save a spot on their body for this all-important gear. At first I was thinking maybe I should just double the amount of ability points gained, make it every second level instead of every fourth, or two every fourth level. Further thinking though, led me to believe that that would not necessarily be a good way to do things since it would either

A) Allow classes *cough*wizards*cough* with only one true stat to pump it up to ludicrous lengths, although I suppose a max natural increase cap of +5 could be included.

B) Weaken classes that are dependent on multiple abilities because then they couldn't get a +6 item for each of their abilities.(although reflecting on that it might make things easier money wise for them and they could spend their cash on useful items)

Does anyone have any thoughts on my thoughts to fix it or thoughts of their own and what would be a good way to remove the ability enhancing items from the game?

As for why I want to remove them, it just gets tiring saying "ok, rogue +6 dex gloves, wizard +6 int headband." It'd make the game more fun to be able to truly customize your equipment and not have to worry about it's effect on your abilities. (Why yes, I hate itemization dependence. How did you guess?)

Thanks for your thoughts and input.

You don't want stat boosting items? Get rid of stat boosting items. Give out ability points every even level instead.

Potentially, you could increase the duration of those 2nd level spells that give enhancement bonuses to ability scores, or maybe make a new spell of a higher level and leave the current ones as is.

Greater Magic Weapon is a spell that eventually grants a +5 enhancement bonus to a weapon with 1 hour/level as a duration... certainly seems like a +2, 4, or 6 at later levels wouldn't be totally unbalancing, neh?

Your basic problem is not that everyone needs the item. They don't.

But instead that everyone thinks they need it.

Simple solution: Raise the price. Eventually they will start to say, hey "I like that +6 Con Amulet, but I think I would rather spend the money on my sword."

The spell idea is good. Switch it back to 1hour/level duration, then perhaps make higher level spells, such as

Level 3(maybe 4) - Insert witty name here
Duration 1hour/level
Gives +4 Str and +4 Con

then maybe a lvl 6 spell adds to 3 stats. Then have a lvl 8 spell that's mass?
