this is something of a rant; all arrows in D&D are the same (for a creature's size).

consider it; a longbow's arrows are listed as 20 for 1Gp, the same as a shortbow's arrows. BUT, for some reason they list arrows four seperate times in the PHB.

you and i both know that the arrows for the long & short bows are different legths in RL (what the length of your forearm for shortbow arrows and the length of your leg for the longbow? don't remember the exact generalization*).

does this matter in D&D or not? no, but yes; for many people this means roughly nothing, and fine with them. some people are sticklers for logic and all (even though they're playing a game with spellcasters and demons and other really-cool-but-not-even-possible-but-who-cares-anyway-things). and of course there are the people that didn't even notice this, nothing against them either (they just failed thier investigate checks, or somesthing...).

a) who cares about logic; this means that a guy who took the proficiency feat for the greatbow isn't hosed when not a single opponent that wields a bow uses the greatbow (translation, that the guy can use arrows that are the spoils from dealing with any short and longbow wielders).

b) stickler; how in th BEEP could you fire a shortbow arrow from a longbow, let alone a greatbow! it's freaking insane that this is allowed by the rules!

c) huh?; whaddaya mean that they are interchangable? (or whaddaya mean that they aren't interchangable in RL?). doesn't really matter to you because if it's never come up in you campaigns, you probably don't have to worry to much about it in the future (unless you bring it up your self).

D) NONE OF THE ABOVE MATTERS UNLESS YOU'RE THE DM, REMEMBER RULE ZERO (if you don't like the rule, you/the DM can change it).

------
* yes i know that's an oxymoron. fun huh?

now onto the part that might matter (it occured to me after i started my rant, so sue me for falsely advertising this thread as useless).

ammunition for firearms in D&D;

in RL different guns often use different caliber's of bullets. (if you didn't know this, yeah, you learned something today). but in RL whe use different arrow sizes as well.

does that mean it's "reasonable"** to use a single caliber of bullet for all firearms? (i mean for D&D. d20 anything*** is another matter). of course this assume you have an opinion on firearms in D&D other than "not in my game!".

form nimg players, though i probably lost your interest upon typing "ammunition for firearms in D&D"

i'll add more to this thread... maybe.*x4

---------------------(wheeeeeeeee)--------------
**reasonable if your willing to ignore a little logic.
***d20 anything sounds like a good name for a splatbook.
****only maybe, because i've recently had a bad habit of posting on or starting a thread, promising to work on it and then getting caught up in other hobbies & parts of my life. if'n you never see nothing about this here thread agin, that's why. on the other hand there could be a purely logical reason such as a lack of capability to transcribe my thoughts into documentation for me to share it with you (my computer crashes).

bye! (hopefully not for long).

As far as I know its not forearm and leg. At least for longbows its not leg, shortbows it might be forearm. A fair number of longbows tend to be more along the lines of most a person's heightm if fitted to a person that size.

Your're right about the arrows, same thing can be said for bolts too. Not everything is made equal.

The real question is Do you want firing a bow to be so complex that no-one ever does? It may be as simple as saying theres 3 sizes of arrows and thats it, or you could get into arrowheads, broad, sharp, yada, yada, yada. And have those give certain bonuses to diffrent creatures, or types/subtypes.

While you are right, I don't think its necessary to complicate the game much further than it already is.
