How many iuon (happy now?) stones may a character equip at the same time, 1, 3, 5, 10?

None

Alternatively, they can have..so far as I know..infinite Ioun stones. Though, more than 8 or 10 would probably start kinda hindering vision

Larloch has a couple dozen ioun stones. Although he's an epic mage, but he doesn't have any feats pertaining to the number of ioun stones he can use, and I've never seen any rules limiting them. I don't know about vision, but your DM can houserule things as he sees fit. You just have to remember, though, that bonuses from the same source don't stack, so that keeps the bonuses from ioun stones from getting too insane.

Thats the problem, our DM only allow us 1 Ioun stone per PC,
and as you say there are not (havent seen them either) rules about limiting them, so i was expecting you to know, well I must accept what my DM says.

Ions normally only occur in very high energy events or in solutions. Stones are neither. Thus I don't know where you're going to get an ion stone.

If you're talking about ioun stones, there's no limit. Beware that most of them are subject to the normal stacking limits, though.

Ioun stones are priced as if they don't take up a slot (double price, check the +2 stat ones versus +2 stat gloves/belt etc), so if your dm is saying that you can only have one, then you have a really strong argument to put forth that they should cost half as much as listed, because he is basically making another slot; "orbiting around the head", and the ioun stones are now not slotless.

Having said that, though, having a vast number of them whizzing around your head, would be distracting, I'd put a -1 penalty to spot fro every stone after about 8 or 10, as you are less likely to notice things if there is already movement around your head, and a maximum of 15-20 stones, or they will start to interfere with each other.

Funny thing to note, I'm not entirely certain, but those LOOK like they're all +2 {attribute} stones, too

If I'm not mistaken, they're slotless items, which is also accounted for in their prices.

If your DM is limiting you to one Ioun stone then he needs to cut the market price and crafting costs for all of them in half. Pointless house rules like that need to be compensated in turn, no one is going to be stupid enough to pay twice as much for a +2 enhancement bonus to STR when the item granting it is already the easiest item to swipe from their inventory.

Someone posted a prestige class here which was based on the character having a huge cloud of dull gray ioun stones floating around them; these gave an increase in armor class and could later be used to launch touch attacks, deflect arrows and spells, and so on :)

The Ioun Aficianado can be found here (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?s=&postid=2518704) (yay for Google) :D

And yeah, they're slotless and limitless, which is why they're so expensive. Your DM may houserule that after about 100 they start to limit vision and add deflection bonuses to AC.

There's no rule in third edition.

In first and/or second edition, thelimit was, IIRC, six. That's also what I tend to use, myself, when I GM: you can have a half-dozen of them without any problems. Past that, and you'd have problems with collisions (two or more ioun stones running into each other and dropping to the ground as they knock each other our of orbit), impaired vision, and just being generally VERY distracted.

They're "unslotted" items, so you can have as many as you want. As Jake Tewdric pointed out, putting a limit on them is creating an extra "slot" for them, so thier cost should be halved, since you can only have so many at once.

Ioun stones don't bump into one another, and there was never a limit on how many you could use. This is fantasy...reality doesn't have to enter in. If they orbit above and around your range of vision, they won't ever disturb you.

The idea of a one shot psion/20 having 20,000 grey ioun stones storing 1 PSP each is kind of scary, tho...

No it isn't. You can't use PP's from different sources to manifest powers. Basically, they could cast 1st level powers 20,000 times.

yeah, that is scary... that's like 20,000 rounds of boredom for the rest of the party =P

it would make for a very, very, slow way to tunnel through a thick wall or something i guess... and you could vigor your way into health i think (do temp points still turn into normal points if they don't exceed max?).

and i suppose there are other level 1 powers (at level 1 strength) that might be somewhat useful. maybe.

although, technically... i suppose if you also owned crystal capacitors, you could use the ioun stones to fill them up.

As far as I can tell, everything I've seen on Ioun stones states that you can use as many of them as you want, the magical effects of the stones themselves activating as you release it over your head, and they can only be removed by the owner, or someone making an attack against the Ioun Stone, counting as an object carried on your person, provoking an Attack of Oppertunity. As to the AC of the Ioun Stone...I don't remember where it is! But they are slotless, and while the bonuses are subject to the normal stacking rules, between the DMG and Larloch's assortment of stones, it's fairly obvious that there should be a stone to do just about anything that a PC wants, it's just a matter of it being created(at double the normal cost of a magical item of that type). I've had PC's use it to duplicate the effects of various rings(such as a ring of sustinence) and rods(at high level). Ioun stones can be a pc's best friend or a DM's worst nightmare depending on your house rules and the creativity of the PCs.
