| kender0005-10-05, 01:06 PM | We are looking in the rules of the players guide, the master guide and the complete warriors guide for a rule about parrying and blocking an attack with a weapon or with no weapon... (unarmed strike for the monk). We didn't see anything that talk about this... Can you tell us where to find that rule... 'cause, we all think that if we have a weapon in our hand, we should be able to parry and attack... but we don't know how to apply that kind of defense... Here we don't talk about disarm, but we talk about only parry or block... even on an attack that is made on one of our friends or other npc... Thank you.. Kender00 |

| Tony Vargas05-10-05, 02:33 PM | The game doesn't have a mechanic for parrying, but there are several that touch upon the fact it's better to be armed... You can use Combat Expertise /while making a melee attack/ (so you need to be armed), to increase your AC. That's pretty close to parrying. Similarly, you can fighte defensively. If you attack someone unarmed (without IUS), you provoke an AoO - you can consider this as representing the fact that you can't parry his return attacks. |

I've always thought that the natural movement of combat, resilience of the body and parrying with one's weapon was the source of these 10 points. If you want a bonus to reflect parrying then as has been said combat expertise is the way to go. |

A lvl1 commoner has a 50% chance of hitting another. I'd say that the Dex mod also indicates some amount of basic parrying, though mostly dodging. Basically, what we are all trying to say is that D&D has always tried to keep combat as streamlined and abstract as possible. They tried to shoehorn a parry mechanic into 2nd edition, but it never really worked very well. Parrying adds another roll to each attack roll, which just makes a mess of things. If you really wanted to, you could try to allow your players to give up one of their attacks to make an opposed attack roll or something. If the defender wins, his weapon takes damage (maybe use sunder rules here, i don't know), but his body doesn't. You have to keep track of which attack out of an iterative set are held back for the parry. I would suggest that you only allow a character to parry with attacks from the current round. That is, if his turn comes before his opponent, he has to decide whether to make all his attacks at once, or wait to parry. If his turn comes afterwards, he can parry and then use whatever attacks he has left over. You might want to create a feat like Improved Parry that allows you to give up an AoO instead of a regular attack. This would be a house rule. I'm sure somebody somewhere has fleshed it out a bit better. I really don't think it will be a lot of fun though. D&D combat already takes for ****ing ever as it is. |
| Nitneuq Onitnarat05-10-05, 05:32 PM | I always think of the 10 as taking ten on your defense check. there is a suggested rule (which I occasionally use for 1 on 1 fights or other very small encounters) that replaces this ten with a d20 roll. |
| DeadEye1905-11-05, 01:56 AM | It's not just about being armed or not- a dagger and a longsword grant the same benefit. I tried to look into it, but I couldn't find a good way to include parry. Maybe granting One and two handed weapons( not light weapons) a +1 circumstance bonus to AC on melee that is lost when you lose your Dex modifier. Just a thougt without, twiking the balance too much. |
| Imric05-11-05, 08:36 AM | well in never winter nights the game they have parry as a skill, it uses dexterity, you dont attack instead you roll a D20 and add you skill moddifier, if you total is bigger than the enemies (attack roll +mods) you have parried other wise you get hit and if you beat your enemies roll by 10 you get an AoO on him! some other things you might want to consider is taking full deffence stance...not sure if thats in the rules though.. but we play you lose your attacks but you gain a +4 dodge mod to AC, also try maxing out your tumble because when you have 5 or 6 ranks in it you gain +1AC on deffnecive stances and if you have 10 ranks in tamble i think it increases to +2. Also I use that two weapon fighting rule 2 in our game, i also use it for double weapons. |
