Most flying mounts have a minimum forward airspeed that requires a move action for them to remain flying. This usually precludes a full attack for the mount. The rider can make a full attack with ranged weapons while the mount is moving, but the rider is limited to only a single melee attack if the mount moves more than 5 ft. A mount with Good or Perfect flight or a mount with the Hover feat can Hover, which allows the mount to make a full attack and remain airborne. This would also allow the rider to make a full attack with either ranged or melee weapons. And also, do you have to take a separate Ride skill for flying creatures? Nope. One Ride skill rank works for dogs, wolves, horses, dragons, whatever. Just like one Knowledge (Local) rank works no matter where you are. Kinda strange, but that's how it goes. |

| Talmariel12-08-04, 04:12 PM | Originally, you selected a generalized kind of mount when you took Ride, either horse (or horse-like, such as donkeys or even elephants), exotic (things like dire wolves, giant lizards, etc.), or flying. The old rule was that an unfamiliar mount imposed a -4 penalty. Looking at the SRD, there's no indication that that's the case in 3.5. Given that, you don't need to pick a kind of creature when you take Ride, it works for everything as a generic skill. |
