I didn't think they did based on the entry from PHB page 134 that reads "Two creatures of the same size strike each other normally, regardless of what size they are." But there has been some disagreeent with some of those I play with, so I'm asking you guys. Thanks. |

Large vs. Large => no AC penalty instead of both at a -1? Large vs. Huge => one takes a -1, the other a -2 or what? Or is it that the Large creature gets no mod and the Huge a -1? Sounds much to complicated... AC is calculated for each creature and is independent from others... (even if a gnome gets a +4 to AC against giants, it is calculated for him) |
| Nived08-19-06, 11:50 AM | No, no no, no. No changes are needed for combat with large creatures. Allow me to explain. Large creatures suffer a -1 to attack rolls and a -1 to AC. If, when fighting another large creature (also -1/-1) you decided to get rid of the penelties... their attack would go up by one and their AC would go up by one needing exactly the same number to be rolled on a d20 for a hit. Allow me to explain further. Two standard Ogre fighting each other +8 melee Greatclub. AC 16. For one ogre to hit another ogre with standard size rules in effect they'd have to roll an 8 or higher (8+8=16. Have to meet AC for the hit) If you took the time to take away the size modifiers you'd have a +9 melee Greatclub. AC 17. You'd still have to roll an 8 or higher (8+9=17 hit). Thus there is no difference when you take away the size modifiers for fighting creatures of the same size, all you are doing is creating more work. The system is designed for creatures with the same size modifiers to cancel each other out. |

In the case of two Large creatures, one may have a -1 penalty to his AC, but then his opponent will have -1 to his attack roll, so it just cancels out. Don't make it more complicated than it seems. Worry when creatures opposing one another are of different sizes. |
