Gday

I was hoping somebody could tell me the stats for an Adamantine Breastplate (AC, max dex, and penalty)
as i havent bought myself any books (yet)

& with those stats in mind does the dex penalty comes off you skills that use dex like this?
(for this example the dex penalty will be 4)
have 6 ranks in a skill (lets say tumble), and ability mod (dex) +3, (penalty) -4 making the skill a total 5?

Your addition is perfect, mate. Your adamantine breastplate has exactly the same stats as the normal breastplate you're looking at. However, the incredible gold you're paying is for this: You gain Damage Reduction 2/- for that precious metal. (Look up adamantine or special materials, I assume you're using the SRD). Medium armor of adamantine.

Btw, It's in the rulebook that all adamantine breastplates have to bear large artistic insignia of wallabees, and the accompanying helm be decorated with emu feathers.

You can use SRD. It has almost all the contents you need(not 100% though).

Okay, I am a newbie so bare with me here if you will.

I looked through some of those charts and tried to come up with a total price to buy a +1 Adamantine Breastplate

would the cost be

breastplate = 200 gp
Adamantine= 10,000 gp
+1= 1,000 gp

so would the total price then be 11,200 gp?

I just want to make sure you understand that the Max Dex allowed by the breastplate does not effect skills, only the Armor Check Penalty.

My character has a Dex of 24 (+7 mod), and I wear a breastplate (Max Dex of +3, and ACP of -4).

His total Armor Class is: 18 (10 base+5 from Armor+3 from dex)
His tumble skill check is: 9 (6 ranks, +7 Dex, -4 Armor Check Penalty)

Dear gods in the Seven Shining Heavens of Celestia MAN!!! Whay are you wearing a breastplate? Get yourself a set of Bracers of Armor and Forget about any armor at all... if your dex goes up anymore only Padded will do you any good. Bracers of Armor, repeat with me, Bracers of Armor...

Maybe he cant afford the 64,000gp it costs for the 8ac from Bracers of Armor and is content to get the 8ac (5 + 3 from dex bonus) from his armor for 11,200gp. I know i would untill i could afford it.

Actually it would cost him only 1000 gp to get the 18 AC. His dex modifier is +7 and bracers of armor +1 cost only 1000 gp. So logically if he can afford 11000+ gp adamantine breast plate, he can easily afford some form of bracers of armor.

The trouble with the whole direction you min/maxxers have taken is the silly idea that you have to get the highest AC possible for the least amount of money or work.

I have a feeling that he envisions a character, and how he looks and acts, and what would be "right" for the character in the setting.

Caesar would look pretty silly leading the roman legions into Gaul wearing full plate, or bracers of armor.

Otherwise, Tek79 would have been asking about +5 adamantine full plate, and how to overcome the ACP, and I would have ignored his thread completely.

yes, but Caesar would also look incredibly stupid if his enemies pincushioned him with arrows.

it is not bad roleplaying to be effective.

you think knights wore all that armor because it looked cool? no, they wore it to not get killed.

if you have never tried to get more bang for your buck, then you must be richer than i, because i dunno about you but i regularly look at what i'm getting and shop around to get the best thing sometimes (especially if it's something expensive, and i would put a little extra effort in as well if i thought my life might depend on it... and hey, guess what, in D&D, your character's life depends on how well equipped he is).

i mean, honestly, how many modern armies run around using civil war weapons? none. why? because when you are in the profession of fighting, having the best equipment is important.

if, statistically speaking, it is a better idea to wear bracers of armor, then it makes sense for the character to wear bracers of armor. and pay a little bit of cash for an illusion of armor.

Jaid, I'm not looking for a spat. :) But you totally missed the point. Take a step outside the box for a moment. Caesar didn't have options like Plate or Bracers, because they did not exist; The breastplate or banded armor was the epitome of equipment. Tek97 may be choosing his character's equipment with those kind of restrictions, either self-imposed or DM-imposed, for flavor. A character he just read of in a book or saw in a movie may be the inspiration.

Or, I could be totally wrong, and the maxxing out ideas didn't occur to him, for his not owning the books yet.

Certainly, in our games, only a fraction of the equipment "listed" in the books (core books, at that!) is available. Not by size of city, not by any insane amount of gold we have. Armor and weapon types available vary by area, by very large far apart area; In a world based on Europe (with totally different names, etc), we can get plate in England(only), Scale in Egypt(only), Banded in Greece, Breastplates and Chain about anywhere. Applies to dwarves and elves per area, too.

Certainly, we've played in other peoples' games where it's "Everything available Everywhere". Makes for a very boring game rather quickly.

You'd simply have a heartattack if I brought up magic "items". I'll spare you. ;)

We "shop around" too; I've had a priest-character make a three-month ship passage to AmonRe (our egypt) to replace his scale armor; He wore halfplate for the whole trip, bought in Gran Albion (our england), griping the entire way. Just cuz it was "in character".

Getting the picture at all? (I'm not saying that it need be a picture embraced... just that there's other ways to enjoy the game.)

I would rather have my touch AC at 17 by buying plain old padded than wear a Breastplate because it looked cool... If he took the pain to jack his Dex up to 24 he did it for a reason. Wearing no armor at all he only loses 1 AC. Not to mention with padded he'd have no ACP and a helluva lower ASF.

Get some bracers or buy some magic padded armor (you can squeeze one more point of Max Dex out of it)!!!!

FarFairer had the 24 dex, not the OP Tek79.

However, since he did in fact mention being concerned with 'tumble', I wonder what class his character is, myself. But he also was vague, as if just using that as a random example for ACP penalty clarification.

You really would be better off with normal leather armor, or even simply padded armor. They are a lot cheaper and let you use your amazing dex. Remember the maxium possible AC from wearing mundane armor is between 6 and 9 points. The only ones which have a potential of reaching 9 are fullplate and padded. There are 4 armors which cap out at +8, 4 that cap out at +7, and 1 that caps out at +6 (banded mail, the poor mans heavy armor).

Hehehe. Hey, I resent that! My favorite character's favorite armor is banded mail, and he's made it to 18th level fighter, thank-ya-very-much! He has an 11 dex, but great str&con. And he's always been a loner; You can't don plate alone in the wilderness. So Naaa!

Editted to add: Wait a second... Banded @ +6? In 3.5 it's +7 (6Ar, 1Dex). Are you playing 3.0 maybe? Or second thought: Are you thinking of Splint?

Well if he wants a cheap around 1k solution, Mithril Shirt all the way. 4ac max dex bonus of 6, no ACP... light armor..all for 1100gp

Or if he's looking at the over 10k price range he could go with Celestial Armor
+3 chainmail, max dex of 8, ACP of -2..considered light armor, and allows the wearer to fly on command (as per the spell) once per day. Can get that for 12,500gp.

Then we he gets the riches he can trade them in for some higher + bracers of armor.

Sorry I meant splint, banded isn't that bad since you can put it on alone. If you want cheap go padded (a full 995gp cheaper than bracers which grant the same bonus) or given the cost of your armor 10,195gp cheaper.
