Adamantine Object vs. Weapons/Armor prices [Archive] - Wizards Community

I have players wanting to scavenge Adamantine objects because they figure the prices would scale with weapon/armor prices.

Trying to argue against this, I used the Stronghold Builder's guidebook to determine price of adamantine by volume. A 10'x10'x6" freestanding wall costs 3000 gp, the same as an adamantine weapon. A mild disparity to say the least. If this is the case, then there apparently is a lot of waste product in forging weapons/armor.

Mithril (+500 gp/lb) has a rate that goes in the other direction, implying that less material needs to be used (alloys?) to make weapons and armor than regular items. Darkwood (+10 gp/lb beyond masterwork item) also has a rate, while Adamantine does not list a rate by weight.

So other than saying the crazy crafting techniques are used with weapons/armors solely, does anyone have a source on what the prices of raw adamantine ore or processed adamantine bulk metal (by weight?) in a d20 setting?

Thanks all!

I have not seen that listed anywhere, but if I were you I would just take the middle ground as far as price by weight. I think the lightest weapon you can make out of adamantium is a dagger, at 1lb, and the heviest is the fullblade, at 23lbs. Go for the middle and say that every 12lbs of adamantium is worth 3,000gp

Definately use the bulk prices from the Stronghold guide as a guide for raw metals.

If you need an explanation for why it costs so much more to make adamantine weapons than the amount of metal warrants there are two decent approaches...

1) Adamantine weapons are priced appropriately for their in-game effect, not for their construction.

2) Crafting an adamantine weapon requires other special and expensive consumeable items than just the metal itself. Perhaps casting it requires chemical reactions where the catalyst ends up unuseable, or shaping it involves diamond coated grinding wheels... nothing says that the initial crafting cost is just the metal.

I don't recall what mithral's cost should be according to the SBG, but the core rules pretty clearly peg the metal itself at 1000gp/lb (since the mithral item ends up weighing half what the steel item it replaces did).

Totally, a two by four and a Steel billet don't cost that much different, but I will charge you a ton more to forge a steel sword than to just rasp you one out of Pine.

The 3000 gold represents the dificulty of the labor required to work such a tough material.

I wouldn't even give them the 3000 to make a wall, that price represents the value of the work as well. I would maybe give them 1200 gold for a 600 cu ft block of Adimantium

Edit: Eureka, wholesale Adamantium for 2GP a cu ft!

Yeah, just remember it won't be in nice rectangular blocks. You're likely to get bloom or crappy castings that won't be useful unless you hot work them. And that means they pay the construction cost anyway.
